Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2024 — The African Week of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) showcased Algerian traditional attire as the highlight of the event. During the UNESCO African Week event held on Thursday, May 24th in Paris, Algerian designer Karim Akrouf presented a collection of traditional clothing. Akrouf unveiled a series of Algerian outfits from various regions of the country, dazzling the audience.
Karim Akrouf is one of Algeria’s most famous fashion designers. He works to promote Algerian heritage through various traditional costumes designed with precision and finesse, some infused with a modern touch. He has won the award for best Arab designer three consecutive years since 2021.
During the UNESCO African Week, Akrouf showcased different types of Algerian caftans, including the Constantine caftan, the Annaba caftan, the Bey caftan, and others.
Additionally, the models in the Algerian fashion show were also dressed in Algerian karakou, Oran blouza, Kabyle robes, and other traditional attire reflecting the cultural richness of the country’s various regions.
Karim Akrouf Takes Algerian Heritage Global
Many spectators and internet users expressed their great admiration for these garments, which reflect Algeria’s authentic and age-old culture. Numerous Algerian internet users believe that Karim Akrouf has perfectly represented Algeria. In their comments, they assert that his collection will help foreigners better understand Algerian heritage, thereby increasing the chances of Algerian traditional clothing being showcased on the international stage.
It’s worth mentioning that Itziar Ituño, the star of the famous series “La Casa de Papel,” recently made waves by wearing the Algerian karakou at the Mediterranean Film Festival of Annaba. This sparked admiration from many Algerians and further highlighted the cultural significance of Algerian traditional attire.
