Algiers, September 10, 2023- The forthcoming Algiers summit between Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is poised to revolve around critical issues related to industry and mining. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf of Turkey revealed this focus during his visit to Turkey to prepare for the summit, emphasizing that “industry and mining issues will be at the center of discussions during the meeting of the two presidents on the occasion of the Algiers summit.”

Attaf highlighted the burgeoning dynamism in Algeria’s mining sector, driven in part by the launch of two monumental mega-projects in iron ore and phosphate. Turkish investors have taken a keen interest in these projects, demonstrating their enthusiasm to participate in the forthcoming phases of these pivotal ventures.

“Algeria places immense importance on these major structuring projects for its future,” Attaf asserted. Indeed, the Gara Djebilet iron ore megaproject has been attracting increased foreign attention, particularly from Turkish investors, following the implementation of the new investment code.

Among the key Turkish investors is the Tosyali company, symbolizing Turkish investment in Algeria. Tosyali recently announced the expansion of its iron ore processing activities, serving as an encouraging model for other Turkish enterprises to follow suit.

Additionally, Attaf highlighted the integrated phosphate megaproject, which is poised to undergo significant developments, particularly in terms of raw material processing. These two cornerstone projects hold paramount significance for the national economy, contributing both to wealth creation and employment opportunities, while also bolstering foreign currency reserves, given the surging global demand for steel products.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf also addressed strategic aspects of cooperation between Algeria and Turkey, with a strong emphasis on energy collaboration. He specifically discussed the ongoing negotiations surrounding the supply of Algerian gas to the Turkish market, highlighting the importance of renewing the gas supply agreement.

Furthermore, Attaf underscored the pivotal role of Algeria’s textile sector, hosting the largest textile complex on the African continent. He pointed to the significant potential for collaboration in defense and shipbuilding, proposing that Algeria and Turkey, both historically influential naval powers in the Mediterranean, consider prioritizing shipbuilding to reinvigorate the sector.

In conclusion, Attaf emphasized that the prospects for cooperation between Algeria and Turkey are extensive, encompassing various strategic domains. The Algiers summit promises to serve as a critical forum for forging closer ties, advancing economic interests, and expanding collaborative efforts in areas that hold immense promise for both nations.
