ALGIERS- As the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws near, Algeria stands united in support of its national football team, emphasizing a collaborative effort between the government, football federation, and the passionate fan base. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to sports development, particularly football, has set the stage for an ambitious campaign in the upcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2023.
In a recent cabinet meeting presided over by President Tebboune, the government reaffirmed its unwavering support for the national team, led by coach Djamel Belmadi. Recognizing the importance of a successful campaign in AFCON, the government is providing all necessary resources to ensure the team’s optimal preparation and performance.
Algeria’s journey to AFCON 2023 follows a disappointing early exit in the previous edition in Cameroon. The team, often referred to as “Les Fennecs” or the Desert Warriors, is eager to redeem itself and replicate the success of the 2019 AFCON, where they clinched the title under the leadership of Coach Belmadi.
President Tebboune’s sports-centric policies include investments in world-class sports facilities, underscoring Algeria’s commitment to becoming a leader in African sports infrastructure. Additionally, Coach Belmadi is expected to finalize the squad during a closed training camp at the Technical Center in Sidi Moussa in late December, including a friendly match on home soil.
