ALGIERS- The highly anticipated draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the Africa Zone took place on Thursday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, during the 45th Ordinary General Assembly (AGO) of the African Confederation (CIF). Algeria, one of the continent’s football powerhouses, discovered their opponents as they embark on their journey to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.

Algeria finds themselves in Group G, alongside formidable teams such as Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique, Botswana, and Somalia. The draw sets the stage for a fierce battle, as each nation competes for the top spot and a direct ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

The Algerian national football team, known as the Desert Warriors, will face stiff competition in their quest to qualify. Guinea, a team with a rich footballing history, possesses a formidable lineup capable of challenging any opponent. Meanwhile, Uganda has consistently displayed their talent and determination in recent years, making them a tough contender.

Mozambique, Botswana, and Somalia complete the group, bringing their own unique strengths and strategies to the field. These teams cannot be underestimated, as they are determined to make their mark on the global stage and secure a berth in the 2026 World Cup.

In Group A, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, and Djibouti will compete for a place in the tournament. Group B features heavyweights Senegal, DR Congo, Mauritania, Togo, Sudan, and South Sudan, ensuring intense battles among these talented squads.

The qualifiers continue with Group C, consisting of Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho. Group D brings together Cameroon, Cape Verde, Angola, Libya, Eswatini, and Mauritius, promising captivating clashes and unexpected outcomes.

Group E sees Morocco, Zambia, Congo, Tanzania, Niger, and Eritrea vying for World Cup qualification, while Group F presents a challenging lineup of Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Kenya, Gambia, Burundi, and the Seychelles.

Groups H and I complete the picture, with Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Malawi, Liberia, and Sao Tome and Principe in Group H, and Mali, Ghana, Madagascar, Central Africa, Comoros, and Chad in Group I.

It is crucial to note that only the winners of each group will secure a direct spot in the 2026 World Cup. However, the four best runners-up will face off in a CAF play-off tournament, with the eventual winner earning a chance to participate in the FIFA play-off tournament scheduled for March 2026.

For Algeria, the path to World Cup qualification will undoubtedly be challenging. Their group is filled with worthy opponents who are equally eager to represent their nations on the global stage. The Desert Warriors will need to showcase their renowned resilience, tactical prowess, and skillful play to emerge triumphant.
