ALGIERS- In a remarkable demonstration of diplomatic engagement, Algeria played a pivotal role in the proceedings of the 3rd G77+China Summit, held on January 21-22 in Kampala, Uganda. The final declaration adopted during the summit encompassed several proposals and viewpoints articulated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in his address to the participants in the previous meeting in Kampala. The theme of the summit, “Leaving No One Behind,” highlighted the commitment of G77+China member states to principles of cooperation for concrete development on the international stage.
Referencing the foundational Algiers Charter, adopted during the group’s first ministerial meeting in October 1964, the final summit statement emphasized the enduring principles of unity, complementarity, cooperation, and solidarity among Southern countries. The Charter, instating these principles, strengthened their determination to achieve economic and social development individually and collectively.
Leaders at the summit expressed their conviction regarding the need to “chart a new course” for the G77+China, particularly in a global context marked by multidimensional crises and emerging challenges. The group embraced several proposals and viewpoints presented by President Tebboune, acknowledging and lauding the “Algiers Declaration” concerning the development of startups. This declaration was adopted during the African Startup Conference held in Algiers in December 2023.
Advocating Financial Responsibility for Development
During the summit, the G77+China delivered direct and assertive messages to developed countries, urging them to “assume the principal responsibility for development financing.” The group underscored this imperative as a means to address current development imbalances and confront the challenges of the 21st century.
Algeria Leads Advocacy for Just Causes Worldwide
Algeria emerged as a leading advocate for just causes worldwide, particularly focusing on the rights of peoples to self-determination. The country spearheaded efforts addressing critical issues such as the Palestinian cause and the Western Sahara question. The G77+China extended “permanent and principled” support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, aligning with their legitimate national aspirations for freedom, peace, and dignity in an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The summit’s final declaration denounced the “systematic and blatant” violations of international law by the Zionist entity, calling for compliance with international law and accountability. It expressed concern for the dire humanitarian catastrophe and the devastating economic and social conditions afflicting the Palestinian people.
A Call for Justice and Accountability
The G77+China urged accountability for those responsible for these violations, calling on the UN Security Council to make serious efforts in implementing its decisions to end the impunity enjoyed by the Zionist entity. The group emphasized the importance of achieving a just and peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue.
The G77 at the United Nations, established on June 15, 1964, as a coalition of 77 countries, has expanded to include 134 members. The group’s ambition is to eradicate poverty in its member countries by 2030, underscoring a collective commitment to sustainable development.
Algeria’s active and impactful participation in the G77+China Summit reinforces its diplomatic leadership and commitment to global causes, marking a significant contribution to international cooperation and solidarity.
