Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has officially announced the commencement of corn harvesting in Algeria’s desert regions, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural development. Farmers in the southern province of Adrar have started reaping the yellow corn, which will primarily be used for livestock feed.
A video released by the ministry on Saturday showcased the ongoing harvesting process, highlighting the vital role of these arid lands in contributing to Algeria’s food security, particularly in the production of essential grains. Adrar, in particular, is increasingly being seen as a critical area in the country’s quest to secure a reliable and sustainable food supply.
The expansion of crop cultivation in Algeria’s desert regions has been a key focus of the government, as the country looks to diversify its agricultural output and reduce dependency on imports. The decision to focus on corn, an essential ingredient in animal feed, is part of broader efforts to increase local production and enhance the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
