Algiers, Algeria – In a press conference held in Algiers today, Mokhtar Said Mediouni, CEO of the Algerian Airport Services and Infrastructure Management Company (SGSIA), announced projections for a significant increase in passenger traffic at the Algiers International Airport. Anticipated to rise from 6.2 million passengers in 2022 to nearly 10 million by the end of 2024, this surge comes amidst a gradual revival of air travel post the Covid-19 pandemic.
Steady Growth and Optimized Infrastructure Utilization
Mediouni emphasized the company’s commitment to maximizing the utilization of airport infrastructure, aiming for a 100% capacity utilization rate. Efforts will focus on improving services and enhancing the passenger experience at Algiers Airport. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, ongoing efforts have seen a continuous increase in activity at the airport hub.
Factors Driving Growth
The projected growth in passenger traffic is attributed to several factors, including the resumption of air travel both domestically and internationally, as well as governmental initiatives to reduce airfare prices. Additionally, an increase in pilgrims traveling for Umrah through Algiers Airport has contributed to the rise in passenger numbers.
To accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic, measures have been implemented to enhance passenger services. These include agreements with café tenants to lower prices in exchange for reduced rental fees, as well as the forthcoming opening of the Duty-Free section in the coming months. Furthermore, investments in modern technologies such as artificial intelligence are prioritized to streamline airport operations and improve efficiency.
Upgrading Airport Facilities
Efforts are underway to modernize airport facilities, including the implementation of automated baggage registration systems to facilitate smoother passenger flow across terminals. A comprehensive digitization program is set to be completed by May 2024, with a focus on enhancing operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
Enhanced Medical Services and Readiness for Hajj Season
Algiers Airport is gearing up for the 2024 Hajj season, with plans to bolster medical personnel and provide specialized assistance to passengers with specific needs. The airport management remains committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers.
In conclusion, Mediouni reiterated the SGSIA’s dedication to providing world-class services and optimizing operations to meet the growing demands of air travel, positioning Algiers Airport as a key hub in the region.
