Algeria’s ANP: A Citizen Army, Alongside the People in All Circumstances

Algeria, August 3, 2023 – The People’s National Army (ANP) has long been a symbol of strength, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the people of Algeria. As a citizen army in the truest sense, the ANP has consistently demonstrated its dedication to the country’s development and cohesion. From disaster relief operations to supporting healthcare initiatives and even playing a role in education, the ANP stands tall as a force that not only protects the nation but also serves its people in times of need.
Stepping Up in Times of Calamity
In the face of adversity, the ANP has always risen to the occasion. Most recently, the country faced devastating forest fires in Médéa, Bouira, Bejaïa, and Jijel in July 2023, which claimed numerous lives. Among the victims were ten brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives while protecting citizens. Yet, this is not the first time the ANP has shown unwavering dedication during perilous times. The Kabylia fires in 2021 and previous disasters bear witness to the ANP’s selfless commitment.
Helping Hands in Natural Disasters
Whenever natural disasters strike, the ANP is at the forefront of rescue and relief operations. Earthquakes in El Asnam (currently Chlef) in 1980 and Boumerdès in 2003 saw the ANP provide crucial aid to victims. Floods in Bab El Oued (2001), Constantine (2018), Adrar, Tipaza, and Tamanrasset showcased the ANP’s pivotal role in reaching affected communities and delivering essential supplies.
Responding to Global Crises
The ANP’s commitment goes beyond borders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while the world was grappling with lockdowns, the ANP remained vigilant, participating in vaccine and medical supply operations both within and outside the country. The repatriation of Algerians stranded worldwide demonstrated the ANP’s reach and dedication to its citizens, regardless of their location.
Education and Health Initiatives
The ANP understands that a strong nation requires an educated population. To ensure equal opportunities for all students, the ANP played a crucial role in transporting examination materials to southern regions, enabling students to take exams simultaneously with their northern counterparts.
Furthermore, in the realm of healthcare, medical graduates from the ANP have been actively involved in the civil service. These dedicated individuals have been serving residents of remote and landlocked areas, bridging the healthcare gap and providing much-needed medical assistance.
Guardians of an Immense Territory
As the guardian of an immense territory covering more than 2,380,000 km2 and over 1,200 km of coastline, the ANP has played a pivotal role in securing Algeria’s borders. Its unwavering commitment to protecting national integrity remains a testament to its strength and dedication.

While the ANP is undoubtedly a military powerhouse, its contributions to Algerian society extend far beyond its traditional role. It has become an indispensable force in times of crisis and a key player in various social initiatives.
