Algeria's Anticipated Presidential Election: New Reactions

ALGIERS- It took over 48 hours for political parties – with the exception of those who promptly responded to the announcement of the early presidential election – to comment on the decision made by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday. Following the lead of the FLN, El Moustakbal Front, RND, and MSP, these parties welcomed this initiative while expressing their willingness to contribute to the success of this election.

As such, the national political landscape is gradually awakening with increased activity from political parties that were previously dormant. Joining the voices of parties that reacted immediately on Thursday, several other political formations, such as Ennahda, expressed the desire for the upcoming presidential election to be “a step in the realization of popular will with massive participation.”

Additionally, the Islamist-oriented party expressed its desire to see the realization of “the rule of law, preserving stability, and removing all obstacles hindering the construction of a robust economy, while enabling Algeria to maintain its role on regional and international stages.” On its part, the National Entente believes that the President’s decision illustrates the constant concern to “preserve constitutional stability and the proper functioning of institutions.” It also demonstrates the political will to restore the electoral schedule to normalcy, while ensuring “respect for the will of the Algerian people, free and sovereign, in expressing their choice, in a democratic, pluralistic, transparent atmosphere.”

Moreover, the movement affirmed its “readiness to carry out this major national appointment in favor of the sovereign constitutional and institutional choice,” while calling for “the achievement of genuine national cohesion.” Similarly, the National Militancy Front welcomed the decision to hold an early presidential election. Like other parties have expressed, this political formation emphasized that the election “comes at the right time to silence voices seeking to sow doubt.” Likewise, the El-Hokm Errached Front welcomed the early presidential election scheduled for September, expressing its willingness to “support this political process and participate in the consolidation of democratic principles, to meet the aspirations of popular will and achieve the ambitions of political and social elites.”

FLN Takes Center Stage in Media

As part of the political formations that promptly reacted on Thursday following the announcement of the early presidential election, the National Liberation Front (FLN) is making efforts to engage in the media space to position itself for the upcoming election. Speaking on a television program yesterday, its new secretary-general, Abdelkrim Benmebarek, affirmed that his political party will participate in the presidential election on September 7 and will mobilize all its cadres. “It is premature to discuss, but it is conceivable that our party will announce an initiative,” he said, without providing further details. Regarding the FLN’s program, he emphasized that it is in harmony with that of the President. “During my very first press conference, I already said that the President’s program aligns with ours. We support it because his objectives serve the interests of the country,” he said.

Workers’ Party Reaction

The Workers’ Party also reacted yesterday to the announcement of the early presidential election. In a statement issued after the weekly meeting of the secretariat of the political bureau, the party reiterated its commitment, stating that it “cannot remain indifferent to an electoral deadline of such importance, partly because of its impact on the fate of the country, and partly given the global context marked by countless perils for humanity, nations, and peoples, whose devastating repercussions are evident in the Sahel region.”

While refusing to engage “in interpretations or speculations likely to spread confusion and uncertainty” regarding the decision to advance the date of the presidential election, the party supports that “our nation is directly targeted in its stability and unity because of Zionist designs aimed at dismantling the entire region.” Consequently, the political formation announces that the party’s governing bodies will examine and determine the issue of the presidential election, taking into account this global and regional context, as well as the interests of the Algerian people, inseparable from national integrity.

Sofiane Djilali Discusses Challenges Ahead

Addressing the issue of the early presidential election during his intervention on national radio yesterday, the president of Jil Jadid, Sofiane Djilali, affirmed that the mere fact that these elections are advanced by a few months does not fundamentally alter the electoral calendar, but “it is the conditions to be established to ensure the holding of a valuable election that are of paramount importance.”

The leader of Jil Jadid also questioned the political system that should be built, emphasizing the principle of consensus, “a system that integrates the essential foundations of national security, state stability, and more flexible functioning of institutions,” he specified. He added that the integration of the concept of the “rule of law” and of an “avowed and constructed democracy” into the equation is an obligation that must be adhered to.
