Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — On January 21, 2025, in Rome, Minister of Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, engaged in a bilateral discussion with Philipp Nimmermann, the German State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, on the sidelines of the first ministerial meeting of countries involved in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2 Corridor) project. The meeting was attended by Algeria’s Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, the Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, the Algerian Ambassador to Italy, as well as the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, and various senior ministry officials.

The talks centered on strengthening cooperation between Algeria and Germany in energy and renewable energy sectors, with a particular focus on advancing joint strategic projects, including the Southern Hydrogen Corridor. Both parties underscored the importance of fostering long-term collaboration in the fields of new and renewable energy, and expanding investment and technology transfer opportunities. The discussion also touched on shared expertise between Algerian and German companies, aimed at promoting carbon footprint reduction, technological advancement, and workforce training in the energy sector.

Minister Arkab took the opportunity to outline Algeria’s ambitious energy programs, particularly its strategy for transitioning towards renewable energy. He provided an update on Algeria’s ongoing efforts to increase natural gas and electricity production, as well as its goals for expanding renewable energy capacity. As part of its energy transition strategy, Algeria has set bold targets for the development of solar and wind energy, with projects aimed at reducing its carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency across its national grid. He highlighted Algeria’s dedication to sustainable development through these efforts and its willingness to collaborate with Germany on the latest energy technologies.

The conversation also delved into the potential for greater collaboration in the hydrogen sector, particularly the Southern Hydrogen Corridor, a project designed to establish a vital energy link between Algeria and Europe. Arkab and Nimmermann both expressed confidence in the growing partnership between their countries, which they emphasized as a strategic alliance for advancing energy security and climate goals in the Mediterranean region.

The minister further emphasized that the development of renewable energy is critical to Algeria’s long-term economic growth, positioning the country as an energy hub in Africa and Europe. With Germany’s technological expertise and Algeria’s renewable energy potential, the two nations are well poised to contribute to the global energy transition.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation, enhance trade and investment opportunities, and work together to combat climate change through innovative energy solutions. Both sides expressed optimism about the future of this partnership, which aligns with their shared vision of a sustainable, low-carbon energy future for Europe and North Africa.
