Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — During the inaugural ministerial meeting on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2 Corridor) held on January 21, 2025, in Rome, Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held discussions with Alessandra Bassini, CEO of the Italian energy company Zhero. The high-level dialogue was attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Italy, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies Nourredine Yassa, and the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, respectively, alongside senior officials from the ministry.

The discussions revolved around fortifying cooperation in renewable energy and exploring investment opportunities in photovoltaic solar energy, green hydrogen, and ammonia production. A central focus was the MedLink project—a groundbreaking high-voltage submarine electricity transmission line with a capacity of 2,000 MW, directly linking Algeria to Italy. This ambitious initiative has been designated as a major infrastructure priority within the European Union’s strategic energy projects.

Minister Arkab underscored Algeria’s vast potential as a leading supplier of clean electricity to Europe, highlighting the country’s robust energy infrastructure and abundant renewable resources. He emphasized that Medlink represents a transformative leap in accelerating the energy transition and promoting sustainable development. “The MedLink project is a cornerstone in our vision to position Algeria as a regional hub for renewable energy, facilitating both local supply and exports to European markets,” stated Arkab.

The minister also provided an update on Algeria’s national renewable energy program, which aims to achieve 15,000 MW of photovoltaic solar capacity by 2035. Sonelgaz has already commenced the first phase with a planned capacity of 3,200 MW. Arkab highlighted the strategic importance of strengthening the electrical grid between northern and southern Algeria, which will play a critical role in optimizing the integration of renewable energy into the national energy mix.

For her part, Alessandra Bassini expressed Zhero’s strong interest in the MedLink project, describing it as a strategic initiative to enhance energy interconnectivity between Algeria and Italy. She commended Algeria’s commitment to renewable energy and shared her company’s vision for leveraging cutting-edge technologies to develop Algeria’s green energy capabilities.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmed commitment from both sides to advance collaboration in renewable energy, innovation, and expertise sharing. The discussions set the stage for a stronger partnership aimed at achieving the mutual goals of energy transition, sustainability, and regional integration.
