Ahmed Attaf reaffirms Algeria’s principled diplomacy and unwavering commitment to multilateralism, Palestine, and African reconciliation during high-level bilateral talks and UN consultations

Algiers, Algeria | April 12th, 2025 —  In a forceful affirmation of Algeria’s proactive diplomacy and principled global engagement, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, held a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF) in Turkey on Friday. The discussions spanned multiple geopolitical axes—from North Africa and the Sahel to Europe and the Middle East—demonstrating Algeria’s strategic centrality in contemporary diplomacy.

Ahead of the Forum’s official opening, Minister Attaf engaged in extensive bilateral talks with Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman and Chadian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, as well as multilateral consultations with top United Nations officials and representatives of international judicial institutions.

Reinvigorating Bilateral Relations with Croatia and Chad

The meeting with Minister Grlić Radman allowed for a thorough review of the trajectory of Algerian-Croatian relations, particularly in light of upcoming bilateral milestones scheduled for this year. Discussions focused on reinvigorating economic ties and expanding strategic cooperation within a mutually beneficial framework. Both parties reaffirmed their intention to inject new dynamism into areas of shared interest, capitalizing on historical ties and converging economic priorities.

In his exchange with Chadian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, Minister Attaf conducted a comprehensive assessment of Algeria-Chad cooperation. Emphasis was placed on consolidating existing initiatives and exploring new avenues for partnership, particularly in anticipation of concrete bilateral engagements currently being prepared by both sides. The meeting reaffirmed Algeria’s enduring commitment to African solidarity and its deep-rooted engagement in the Sahel region.

Standing with Palestine: Humanitarian Diplomacy and Justice Advocacy

A central focus of Minister Attaf’s diplomatic mission in Antalya was the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. During his meeting with Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Attaf condemned the “heinous and ongoing Israeli aggression against the brotherly Palestinian people” and expressed Algeria’s deep concern over Israel’s systematic obstruction of humanitarian aid and targeted campaign to undermine UNRWA’s vital operations.

Algeria, he stressed, remains unwavering in its support for Palestinian rights and for UNRWA’s indispensable mission, particularly amid unprecedented funding challenges and geopolitical pressure. Attaf reiterated Algeria’s call for the international community to uphold its legal and moral obligations, protect civilian populations, and ensure the continuity of UN humanitarian frameworks in the face of Israeli intransigence.

Further advancing this agenda of justice and accountability, Minister Attaf conferred with Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), regarding the ICC’s procedural undertakings aimed at prosecuting Israeli officials implicated in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Algeria expressed strong support for the Court’s mandate, while stressing the urgent need for robust, impartial, and expeditious international legal mechanisms capable of addressing impunity and upholding international humanitarian law.

Libya on the Diplomatic Radar: Pushing for UN-Led Reconciliation

In a separate meeting with Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Minister Attaf exchanged views on the latest political and security developments in Libya. Discussions centered on the fragile progress toward national reconciliation and the persistent divisions hindering the political transition.

Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s principled stance in favor of a Libyan-led and UN-facilitated political process, affirming that only through inclusive dialogue, institutional legitimacy, and external non-interference can Libya’s sovereignty and unity be restored. Algeria, he emphasized, remains ready to accompany all sincere efforts to bridge divisions and achieve a durable peace in this brotherly nation.

A Diplomacy Rooted in Principles, Extended Through Action

The series of strategic meetings held by Minister Ahmed Attaf in Antalya encapsulates Algeria’s distinctive foreign policy doctrine—one grounded in the principles of non-interference, support for liberation movements, South-South cooperation, and multilateralism.

In aligning with friendly and fraternal nations and engaging constructively with global institutions, Algeria continues to solidify its position as a serious and respected diplomatic actor—an advocate of justice, an engine of African solidarity, and a voice for the voiceless.
