Algiers, Algeria | September 23rd, 2024 — Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various countries and officials from international organizations on Sunday, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Future at the United Nations headquarters in New York. According to a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, these high-level discussions underscored Algeria’s commitment to fostering diplomatic cooperation and addressing pressing global issues.

Minister Attaf met with Musalia Mudavadi, the First Secretary of the Kenyan Cabinet and Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, as well as Vincent Biruta, the Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. In addition, he engaged in discussions with Badr Ben Hamad Ben Hammoud El Boussaidi, the Omani Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Hussein Awad Ali Mohamed, the Sudanese Foreign Minister. Attaf also held talks with Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), the communiqué highlighted.

During his meeting with the Kenyan Foreign Minister, Attaf reviewed preparations for the upcoming Algeria-Kenya Joint Commission, slated to take place in the coming days. The discussion also touched on major continental initiatives and critical deadlines at the African level. In his meeting with Rwanda’s Vincent Biruta, the focus was on upcoming bilateral engagements and key issues within the framework of the African Union (AU).

Attaf’s exchange with Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Ben Hamad Ben Hammoud El Boussaidi, provided an opportunity to discuss matters on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly and explore avenues to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in light of forthcoming high-level official visits between Algeria and Oman.

In his dialogue with Sudan’s Foreign Minister Hussein Awad Ali Mohamed, Attaf examined the latest developments in Sudan, with a particular emphasis on Algeria’s role in defending Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence, especially in light of Algeria’s current position within the United Nations Security Council.

Attaf’s conversation with ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric revolved around the deepening humanitarian crises exacerbated by regional and international conflicts. Both parties discussed enhancing international humanitarian efforts to improve the effectiveness of relief operations in war-torn regions.

In his final engagement, Attaf explored ways to bolster international efforts to enhance global food security with Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme. The discussion focused on securing food assistance for refugees, especially Palestinian and Sahrawi refugees, as well as individuals displaced due to crises and conflicts across Africa.

The productive discussions held by Foreign Minister Attaf at the Summit of the Future reflect Algeria’s proactive diplomacy and its enduring commitment to international peace, security, and humanitarian assistance. These meetings also highlight Algeria’s role in addressing global challenges, particularly those impacting the African continent and the Arab world.
