Algeria’s Attaf Engages with Global Counterparts in New York: Strengthening Strategic Alliances, Multilateral Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — In a series of pivotal diplomatic engagements held Tuesday in New York, Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, met with several of his counterparts to discuss pressing global issues and deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation. These meetings were conducted in the context of Algeria’s leadership of high-level sessions within its current presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

Expanding Partnerships with Strategic Allies

According to a statement issued by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Attaf’s interlocutors included Tanja Fajon, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Slovenia; Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia; Taher Al-Baour, Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda; and Hamish Falconer, Deputy Secretary of State at the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

The meeting with Slovenia’s Tanja Fajon focused on consolidating economic partnerships and reviewing shared priorities on the Security Council’s agenda. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stronger economic ties and exploring avenues for deeper collaboration within the framework of international peace and security.

Reinforcing African Solidarity and Bilateral Ties

Attaf’s discussion with Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi centered on mechanisms to enhance bilateral cooperation and improve coordination within the Security Council. Both nations, currently serving as non-permanent members of the Council, pledged to collaborate on advancing Arab and African causes.

Similarly, his meeting with Libya’s Taher Al-Baour delved into developments on the Libyan political scene. The ministers discussed joint efforts to strengthen the bonds of fraternity and expand avenues for cooperation, particularly in achieving peace and stability in Libya.

The discussion with Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe focused on pressing African issues and the promotion of bilateral relations. Attaf emphasized the importance of building upon agreements reached during a high-level meeting between Algerian and Rwandan leaders in December, highlighting shared goals for regional development and mutual progress.

Strategic Dialogues Beyond the African Continent

Attaf’s meeting with Hamish Falconer of the United Kingdom presented an opportunity to explore pathways for reinforcing strategic dialogue and advancing economic cooperation. Both parties underscored the importance of nurturing their longstanding bilateral relations to address shared global challenges effectively.
