Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, held a series of significant bilateral meetings with counterparts from friendly and allied nations while in New York, attending the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly. These high-level discussions, as detailed in a communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on Wednesday, reflect Algeria’s active engagement on key regional and international issues.
Among the notable foreign ministers Attaf met were Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi of Somalia, Valdrack Ludwing Jaentschke Whitaker of Nicaragua, Juraj Blanar of Slovakia, and Margus Tsahkna of Estonia.
Middle East and Palestinian Situation
Attaf’s meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud focused heavily on the critical developments in the Middle East, particularly addressing “the ongoing Zionist aggression in the occupied Palestinian territories and its broader impact on Lebanon due to the increasing might of the occupying forces.” The ministers deliberated on coordinated efforts within the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), aiming to consolidate international backing for the Palestinian cause while exerting pressure on Israel through diplomatic channels.
Strengthening Relations with Somalia
During his discussions with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Attaf explored opportunities to deepen bilateral ties. A key focus was on cooperation as Somalia prepares to assume a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council alongside Algeria starting January 1, 2025. Both ministers emphasized the importance of closely coordinating their actions in support of shared goals at the UN, particularly in peace and security matters.
Nicaragua and Slovakia Diplomatic Advancements
Attaf’s meeting with Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister Valdrack Ludwing Jaentschke Whitaker underscored the strengthening of diplomatic relations, marked by the recent opening of embassies in both Managua and Algiers. The discussions followed the decision by the two nations’ presidents to enhance their diplomatic representation, signifying a deeper commitment to bilateral cooperation.
In his dialogue with Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar, Attaf expressed his appreciation for Slovakia’s decision to open an embassy in Algeria in the near future. The two ministers discussed steps to revitalize bilateral relations, focusing on building upon their historical connections and working together more closely in international forums.
Dialogue with Estonia
Attaf’s exchange with Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna revolved around potential avenues for bilateral cooperation. They also addressed several pressing international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, reinforcing the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration on shared global challenges.
