Algiers, Algeria | September 4th, 2024 — During a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday addressing “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue,” Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, called for the prosecution of those responsible for the massacres against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
“As stated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, those involved in the massacres and extermination of Palestinians must be brought to justice,” emphasized Bendjama, asserting that Zionist crimes against Palestinians cannot go unpunished.
In his intervention at the Security Council, Bendjama highlighted the need for international action to halt the crimes committed by the Zionist entity in Gaza and the West Bank, where massacres have been occurring in recent days.
“The suffering of the Palestinians today underscores the international community’s failure to enforce its own resolutions against an entity that acts with complete impunity. If we are here, it is because diplomacy has failed,” he declared.
Bendjama urged the implementation of Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2735, which calls for an “immediate ceasefire.” “Had a ceasefire been imposed, more than 3,000 Palestinians, including half of them women and children, would have been saved,” he argued.
“The occupation continues to inflict collective punishment on the populations of Gaza and the West Bank. This barbarity aims to erase Palestinian identity and the very idea of a Palestinian state,” he added.
Since October 2023, he noted, 679 Palestinians, including 150 children, have been killed by Zionist forces in the West Bank. “We have repeatedly condemned these war crimes and crimes against humanity. Today, action is needed to ensure international law is applied. The Security Council must act to ensure its decisions are respected and launch a genuine and effective peace process,” Bendjama asserted.
He also pointed out that 8,700 Palestinians, primarily from Gaza, are “missing,” according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Additionally, 9,400 Palestinians, including 200 children, are detained in Zionist prisons, with 3,600 of them being administrative detainees held for months without charges. These prisoners are subjected to torture and denied ICRC visits, which constitutes “crimes against humanity,” he reminded.
“Since October, Zionist authorities have killed 24 Palestinian detainees,” he added.
Bendjama drew attention to the 552 bodies of Palestinians held by Zionist forces, with the oldest dating back to 1968.
He called on the international community to compel the Zionist entity to cease its crimes against Palestinians, asserting that “silence and inaction in the face of such policies and atrocities will only lead the region towards further escalation.”
Last Monday, Algeria had called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to discuss recent developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in light of the escalating raids by Zionist occupation forces in the West Bank and the ongoing genocide against Gaza’s population. This request was made in coordination with the State of Palestine’s mission to the United Nations.
