Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered a pointed critique of Morocco on Tuesday, directly questioning why the country has not held a public consultation on its proposed autonomy plan for Western Sahara if the plan is as “compelling” as Morocco claims. Bendjama made these remarks during his right of reply at the conclusion of the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
In his intervention, Bendjama highlighted Morocco’s repeated efforts to delay the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people, including the promotion of the so-called autonomy project. “If this project is truly appealing, why doesn’t Morocco offer it for public consultation? Are you afraid of the Sahrawi people’s call for freedom?” he asked, pressing Morocco on its reluctance to test its proposal in a democratic process.
Algeria’s Commitment to Self-Determination
Bendjama also refuted accusations of Algerian interference in the matter, asserting that since its own independence, Algeria has been a staunch advocate for the right of oppressed peoples to self-determination. He expressed concern over Morocco’s repeated mentions of Algeria in discussions on the Sahrawi issue, noting that the Moroccan representative referenced Algeria 20 times within a short ten-minute speech.
He further questioned Morocco’s contradictory positions, asking, “If Western Sahara is so unquestionably part of Morocco, why has the International Court of Justice not recognized it? Why did Morocco agree to divide it with Mauritania? And why is there a persistent fear of holding a free and fair referendum for the Sahrawi people?” Bendjama pointed out these inconsistencies to underscore his argument that Morocco’s approach to the issue lacks credibility.
Upholding the Sahrawi Right to Self-Determination
Bendjama stressed that the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people is enshrined in international law and the resolutions of both the United Nations and the Security Council. He also highlighted the continued presence of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), which, despite its mandate, has been unable to conduct the referendum due to obstructions, which Bendjama attributed to Morocco.
He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for a political solution through negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people. He emphasized that Algeria would support any agreement that respects the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
In closing, Bendjama reiterated Algeria’s firm commitment to supporting oppressed and colonized peoples, particularly the Sahrawi people, in their pursuit of full self-determination. He affirmed Algeria’s resolve to stand by the Sahrawi people in their fight for freedom and justice.
