Algeria’s Béni Abbès to Host New International Airport: A Strategic Boost for Development

Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — Béni Abbès is set to significantly enhance its infrastructure with the upcoming construction of an international airport, as announced by Abdelmadjid Salmi, the region’s director of transport. This project, approved by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, marks a strategic investment aimed at boosting regional development.

The airport will be situated in the Zeghamra zone, approximately 30 kilometers from the capital of Béni Abbès. Its inclusion in the 2024 budget underscores the project’s critical role in improving connectivity and promoting tourism in the area. Salmi confirmed that preliminary procedures for the construction are already in motion, with technical studies being overseen by the management company responsible for Oran’s airport services.

In a recent working session led by Djamel Eddine Heshas, the Wali of Béni Abbès, representatives from various sectors convened to discuss potential administrative and technical challenges that may arise during the project’s execution. Spanning an area of 3,430 hectares and located near National Route 6A, the new airport is expected to serve as a vital transportation hub, facilitating greater access to Béni Abbès and stimulating increased tourist activity.

Currently, Algeria features 13 international airports in major cities, including Algiers, Oran, and Constantine. The addition of the international airport in Béni Abbès will not only strengthen the country’s aviation network but also enhance connectivity to the southwestern region, thereby fostering local economic growth and development.
