Algeria’s Boughali Meets Rwandan Senate President in Kigali

Algiers, Algeria | August 12th, 2024 — On Monday, Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly (APN), engaged in a meeting with François-Xavier Kalinda, the President of the Rwandan Senate, in Kigali. The encounter was part of Boughali’s official visit to represent Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the inauguration ceremony of Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

During their discussions, Boughali highlighted the importance of Algeria’s recent decision to open an embassy in Kigali. He underscored that this move would serve to fortify bilateral relations and explore new avenues of cooperation between the two nations. He also noted the positive impact of General Said Chengriha’s previous visit to Rwanda, which symbolized Algeria’s commitment to promoting peace and security in the Great Lakes region and across Africa.

Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination

Boughali took the opportunity to commend Rwanda’s support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He expressed concern over the actions of some African countries that have established diplomatic missions in Sahrawi territories and the ongoing illegal exploitation of Sahrawi resources. This position underscores Algeria’s steadfast support for the Sahrawi cause and its firm stance against external interference in Sahrawi affairs.

Palestinian Cause and Regional Cooperation

The conversation also touched on the Palestinian issue, with Boughali reiterating Algeria’s call for an end to Zionist aggression in Gaza. He emphasized Algeria’s active role at the United Nations Security Council, advocating for an end to the occupation’s crimes and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

In response, President Kalinda expressed his appreciation for Algeria’s participation in President Kagame’s inauguration and for offering scholarships to Rwandan students. He emphasized the need to deepen bilateral cooperation and proposed the creation of a parliamentary friendship group to facilitate closer ties through regular visits and shared experiences. This proposal aims to further strengthen the collaboration between Algeria and Rwanda on various regional and international issues.
