Algiers, Algeria | August 1st, 2024 — On Wednesday, Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly (APN), was received with warm hospitality in Tehran by Massoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
During this significant visit, Boughali conveyed personal greetings from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and extended his best wishes for Pezeshkian’s success in his newly assumed position. Boughali affirmed Algeria’s satisfaction with the current state of relations between the two countries and emphasized a shared commitment to strengthening these ties through enhanced collaborative efforts and mutual exchanges of expertise.
In his address, Boughali reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast stance on critical international issues, notably the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes. He vehemently condemned the recent violent assault on Palestinian leader Ismail Haniyeh, emphasizing Algeria’s resolute opposition to any form of aggression or injustice affecting these pivotal struggles.
In reaction, President Pezeshkian expressed deep appreciation for Algeria’s supportive presence at his inauguration, interpreting it as a symbol of the strong and enduring bilateral relationship between the two nations. Pezeshkian also reiterated Iran’s unwavering dedication to advocating for Palestinian rights, denouncing the attack on Haniyeh as a breach of international norms that demands universal condemnation.
Expanding Parliamentary and Economic Cooperation
In a follow-up engagement with Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, President of the Iranian Parliament, Boughali explored the current status and future prospects of Algerian-Iranian relations. He congratulated Iran on the successful outcome of its recent presidential elections and reiterated President Tebboune’s commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation, with a particular emphasis on economic development.
Boughali underscored Algeria’s unyielding support for just causes, including the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues, and criticized actions by colonial powers that seek to exploit or subjugate peoples and their resources. He reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to the issue of Western Sahara and its adherence to relevant United Nations resolutions.
Qalibaf expressed gratitude for Algeria’s participation at the inauguration ceremony, viewing it as a testament to the strong and resilient relationship between the two countries. He also committed to advancing the cooperation protocols established between Algeria and Iran and enhancing parliamentary collaboration to further solidify diplomatic relations under the leadership of both heads of state.
This visit underscores the ongoing commitment of both Algeria and Iran to deepen their bilateral cooperation and collaboratively address regional challenges, reinforcing their strategic partnership in a period marked by complex international dynamics.
Algeria and Iran Forge Stronger Bonds: Strengthening Historical Ties and Expanding Multifaceted Cooperation
Algeria and Iran, two nations historically intertwined through shared revolutionary experiences and mutual values, are committed to fortifying their bilateral relationship and expanding cooperation across diverse domains. Both countries have navigated complex paths to independence and have stood resolutely against oppression and terrorism, highlighting their commitment to combat extremism and foster stability.
Historical and Political Solidarity
The relationship between Algeria and Iran is characterized by robust high-level political dialogue and a shared perspective on significant regional and international matters. This includes strong support for the Palestinian cause, advocacy for political solutions in Yemen, Syria, and Libya, and efforts to stabilize the oil market. Algeria’s stances on regional issues, such as the Syrian seat in the Arab League and the designation of groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, align closely with Iran’s positions, reflecting their unified viewpoints on key global issues.
The alliance between Algeria and Iran is grounded in mutual respect and trust, with both countries striving for a global order that honors state sovereignty and the dignity of all nations. Algeria’s independent political stance mirrors Iran’s on many international issues, reinforcing their shared objectives and collaborative spirit.
Regular Diplomatic Engagement
The diplomatic ties between Algeria and Iran were significantly reinforced following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Ayatollah Khomeini’s recognition of Algeria’s revolutionary struggle as an inspiration for Muslims worldwide laid a foundation for close cooperation. The early exchanges between prominent Algerian intellectuals and Iranian leaders, broadcasted on Iranian television, highlighted the friendly and supportive nature of their relationship.
Algeria played a pivotal role in mediating between Iran and the USA during the US Embassy hostage crisis in Tehran, which led to a significant agreement. Despite occasional fluctuations, diplomatic relations were reestablished in 2000, facilitating continued growth in bilateral interactions.
Algeria’s consistent support for Iran’s rights in international forums, even amid nuclear negotiations, underscores their enduring solidarity. The establishment of the Algeria-Iran parliamentary friendship group in Algiers in February further solidifies their commitment to mutual support.
Recent Developments and Bilateral Cooperation
Recent political developments have further strengthened the ties between Iran and Algeria. Former Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi’s commitment to overcoming barriers to economic cooperation has been matched by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s enthusiasm for enhancing bilateral collaboration. Raïssi’s visit to Algeria in March, coinciding with the 7th Gas Summit, was a milestone in solidifying these relations.
During this visit, Algeria and Iran signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for the period of 2024-2025, covering various sectors such as oil and gas, economic technology exchange, tourism and cultural heritage, information sharing, and sports collaboration. The signing ceremony, attended by both President Tebboune and President Raïssi, symbolizes a deep and strategic partnership between the two nations.
Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs)
The MoUs signed highlight the extensive and diverse nature of the Algeria-Iran relationship. They include agreements focused on:
- Oil and Gas Sector: Enhancing collaboration and investment.
- Economic Knowledge and Technology Exchange: Sharing expertise and innovations.
- Tourism and Cultural Heritage Preservation: Promoting mutual cultural understanding.
- Information Sharing: Facilitating cooperation in information and technology.
- Sports Collaboration: Fostering sports-related exchanges and activities.
The MoUs signify a pivotal step in advancing the bilateral relationship, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to elevating cooperation in alignment with their countries’ political will and strategic interests. President Tebboune emphasized the historical depth of this relationship, describing it as rooted in a long-standing and meaningful partnership.
