Algiers, Algeria | August 17th, 2024 — On Thursday, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun inaugurated a newly rehabilitated grain storage unit in Boumerdès, marking its return to service after 21 years of inactivity. The unit, part of the Agrodiv Complex in Corso, now features 36 silos with a storage capacity of one million quintals, as well as a wheat mill capable of producing up to 400 tons per day.

The storage unit had been out of commission since the devastating May 21, 2003 earthquake, which left its structures significantly damaged. Minister Aoun emphasized that the reopening of this facility is crucial for enhancing the country’s strategic grain storage capabilities, ensuring greater food security for Algeria.

Enhancing National Storage Capacity

“The rehabilitation and reactivation of this storage unit will contribute to increasing the national capacity for strategic grain reserves and bolstering food security,” Aoun stated during the inauguration. He also noted that this initiative is part of a broader national program aimed at expanding grain storage infrastructure across many of the country’s wilayas.

The unit’s rehabilitation included extensive renovations to the structures damaged by the earthquake, an investment that Aoun believes will play a vital role in achieving Algeria’s goal of self-sufficiency in grain storage by the end of the year. “The progress made in reinforcing storage capacities across the country is very encouraging,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to achieving autonomy in this critical sector.

Economic and Employment Impact

The reopening of the Corso unit is expected to generate between 500 and 600 jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy. Minister Aoun stressed the importance of prioritizing employment for local residents and those who had previously worked in the facility, capitalizing on their existing expertise.

Additionally, Aoun revealed that new management teams have recently been installed in nine units that were recovered following court rulings on state funds that had been misappropriated. These managers are tasked with developing action plans to ensure efficiency and a swift return to production, further underscoring the government’s broader efforts to restore and enhance Algeria’s industrial and agricultural infrastructure.
