ALGIERS- In recent months, the capital city of Algeria, Algiers, has witnessed a surge in construction projects aimed at revitalizing historical structures from the colonial era and introducing modern amenities for its residents. These transformative initiatives were inspected by the Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Territorial Planning, Brahim Merad, during a press briefing held yesterday.
Minister Merad affirmed that the capital’s development projects are progressing at a commendable pace, emphasizing the rehabilitation of various spaces to restore Algiers to its former glory. Under the auspices of the “Blue Plan” led by the Wilaya’s services, efforts have been focused on enhancing the city’s maritime frontage, ensuring its alignment with the strategic objectives outlined for urban rejuvenation.
Highlighting the significant advancements in the capital’s rehabilitation projects, Minister Merad projected that within the next one to two years, Algiers will witness the completion of numerous infrastructural endeavors, contributing to the restoration of its architectural grandeur. He underscored the overarching goal of “restoring the beauty of the Algerian capital.”
Amidst the ambitious urban renewal projects, Minister Merad emphasized the imperative of completing these costly undertakings to rejuvenate Algiers and enhance its coastal charm. He reiterated the commitment to modernizing key infrastructures to elevate Algiers into one of the most stunning cities in the Mediterranean region.
One of the notable projects inspected by Minister Merad was the redevelopment of the maritime facade on the western side of the Algiers port, particularly the renovation of vaults connecting the Casbah to the Martyrs Square along the waterfront. Minister Merad stressed that these initiatives aim to reestablish Algiers’ historical and cultural significance, enhancing its appeal as a coastal city.
Additionally, Minister Merad visited the Baraki municipality to assess the construction progress of a 120-bed hospital, reaching an impressive completion rate of 70%. This state-of-the-art medical facility, spanning over 14,000 square meters, will offer various healthcare services, including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, operating theaters, intensive care units, and radiology services.
Furthermore, Minister Merad outlined plans to bolster the healthcare infrastructure in Algiers with the imminent inauguration of five new hospitals in Reghaïa, Baraki, and Aïn Benian, each boasting 120 beds, along with specialized facilities dedicated to pediatric cardiology and maternity care.
In addition to urban redevelopment and healthcare expansion, Minister Merad emphasized the deployment of intelligent traffic management systems and video surveillance networks to enhance public safety and mitigate traffic congestion in Algiers. He noted the successful implementation of pilot projects and outlined plans for the expansion of surveillance camera coverage across the capital.
As Algeria’s capital marches towards a new era of urban excellence, Minister Merad’s comprehensive oversight underscores the government’s commitment to elevating the quality of life for Algiers’ residents and positioning the city as a beacon of progress and prosperity in the Mediterranean region.
