Algiers, Algeria | April 17th, 2025 — In an address at the inaugural regional meeting of journalists and media professionals in Oran, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, underscored the imperative of establishing a unified media front to safeguard the nation’s image against multifaceted external pressures.

Meziane highlighted the crucial role of institutional communication in countering content aimed at tarnishing Algeria’s reputation. He stressed that communication officers must actively promote their institutions to prevent the spread of misinformation by ill-intentioned sources. Failure to do so, he warned, would leave a void susceptible to exploitation by hostile entities disseminating false narratives.

The minister emphasized that neglecting this responsibility could lead to a breakdown in communication and the proliferation of rumors, ultimately harming the institution’s image. He called for continuous and specialized training to enhance journalistic performance and ensure the public receives reliable information.

The Oran meeting brought together approximately 500 participants, including a representative from the Directorate General of Communication of the Presidency, media institution leaders, local authorities, and journalists from 17 western and southwestern provinces. The program featured four workshops addressing:

The new legislative framework governing the communication sector and professional ethics.

  1. The state of audiovisual, print, and electronic journalism in the face of new challenges posed by artificial intelligence and 5G technologies.

  2. Institutional communication and its role in promoting Algeria’s image.

  3. Specialized and continuous training and the future outlook of communication professions.

This initiative marks the first of its kind, aiming to create open dialogue spaces with press and media members. Similar meetings are planned in the eastern, central, and southern regions of the country, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to strengthening the national media landscape.
