Algiers, Algeria | November 13th, 2024 — During a conference held Wednesday in Algiers, participants reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast and unyielding support for Palestine, commemorating the 36th anniversary of the proclamation of the State of Palestine and the 20th anniversary of the death of its first president, Yasser Arafat. The forum, organized by El Moudjahid in collaboration with the Machaâl Echahid Association, served as a platform to honor these historic milestones.
36 Years Since the Proclamation of the State of Palestine in Algiers
In a message read on his behalf by Senator Fouad Sebouta, Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the National, recalled that the proclamation of the State of Palestine 36 years ago was a “decisive moment in the recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to live on their own land.” Goudjil highlighted that, after years of struggle against occupation, Algeria had hosted the ceremony marking the establishment of the State of Palestine. On that day, the institutional and political foundations of the Palestinian state were laid, and Palestine later became an observer state at the United Nations.
For Algeria, the Palestinian cause is not just a matter of solidarity; it is inherently tied to Algeria’s own struggle for independence. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had declared that Palestine is a national cause for Algeria. In 1988, during the conference that witnessed the proclamation of the State of Palestine, Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering position in support of freedom and justice. The signing of the Palestinian national reconciliation agreement in Algeria in 2022, under the supervision of President Tebboune, further solidified this stance.
Algeria Supports Palestine “Without Calculations or Hidden Agendas”
Goudjil emphasized that Algeria’s continued support for Palestine is deeply rooted in the country’s history. “Unity is the primary lifeboat against colonialism,” he stated, reminding attendees that Algeria’s victory was built on the unification of its forces and overcoming internal divisions. He asserted that this commitment is a response to the double standards that seek to silence the aspirations of colonized peoples. “We will continue to treat Palestine as a fundamental, existential issue that concerns us all,” Goudjil concluded.
Bashir Abou Hatab, the First Counselor at the Palestinian Embassy in Algiers, also spoke at the event, extolling the enduring significance of President Arafat as a “symbol of resistance and combativeness for his people.” He noted that without Arafat’s tireless efforts for the Palestinian cause, it might not have garnered such global attention. Abou Hatab further acknowledged the challenges and betrayals that the Palestinian cause has faced. He drew parallels between Algeria’s revolution and the Palestinian struggle, noting that Algeria remains one of the few countries to support Palestine “without calculations or hidden agendas.”
The Deep Connection Between the Algerian and Palestinian Revolutions
Mohamed Lahcen Zeghidi, a professor and coordinator of the joint commission of Algerian and French historians, underscored the deep ties between the Algerian and Palestinian revolutions. He highlighted how, during Algeria’s War of Liberation, Algerians had provided significant moral and media support to the Palestinian cause. Zeghidi praised Algeria’s consistent efforts to keep the Palestinian issue at the forefront of international forums, particularly at the United Nations General Assembly. “This diplomatic struggle shows that our country carries the torch of the Palestinian cause on the international stage,” he concluded.
