Algeria’s Constitutional Court Forms Two Committees to Examine Presidential Election Appeals

Algiers, Algeria | September 10th, 2024 — The Constitutional Court has taken a decisive step in examining the preliminary results of the September 7 presidential election by assigning two working groups to review appeals submitted by candidates. According to Ahmed Ibrahim Boukhari, the Acting Director General of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Justice at the Constitutional Court, President of the Court Omar Belhadj has appointed rapporteurs within these two groups to meticulously examine the legal challenges.
In a statement broadcast on Algerian Television, Boukhari confirmed that the appeals were lodged by presidential candidates Abdelaali Hassani Cherif and Youcef Aouchiche. Upon receiving the appeals, the court immediately formed the groups to scrutinize all official reports and recount votes, ensuring transparency and legal conformity.
Boukhari further indicated that the process remains ongoing, with the court awaiting the final centralized report from the electoral commission representing the national community abroad. Once this is received, the Constitutional Court will have up to ten days, as stipulated by law, to announce the official results of the election.
