Algeria’s Council of the Nation Hosts High-Level Algerian-Iranian Parliamentary Talks to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | November 27th, 2024 — On Sunday, November 24, 2024, under the directive of Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mohamed Amroune, President of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and the Algerian Community Abroad, welcomed a distinguished Iranian parliamentary delegation at the Council’s headquarters in Algiers. The Iranian delegation, representing the Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy of the Majlis-e-Shura, was led by Dr. Ibrahim Azizi, its Chairman, and accompanied by Iran’s Ambassador to Algeria, Mohammad Reza Babai.

This strategic meeting underscored the enduring and amicable relations between Algeria and Iran, grounded in mutual respect and trust. Both parties examined the current state of bilateral cooperation and explored pathways to elevate these ties further. The discussions emphasized expanding collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and the knowledge economy while aligning their efforts on pressing regional and international issues, including the Palestinian cause and the broader challenges confronting the Islamic world.

Mohamed Amroune highlighted the visionary leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Iranian counterpart, Massoud Pezeshkian, in enhancing economic ties to match the exemplary political rapport between the two nations. He also emphasized the coordination between Algeria and Iran in international and regional forums, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States, advocating for just causes worldwide.

Reflecting on the deteriorating global security landscape, Amroune called for intensified efforts to uphold international law and resolutions, stressing the devastating impacts of aggression by the Zionist occupier in Gaza, the occupied Palestinian territories, and Lebanon. He reiterated Algeria’s unwavering stance against colonialism, a cornerstone of its diplomacy under President Tebboune, and urged the strengthening of joint Islamic parliamentary action to promote this noble cause.

Dr. Ibrahim Azizi, on behalf of the Iranian delegation, commended Algeria on the 70th anniversary of its November 1, 1954 Revolution, describing it as a beacon of pride for Africa. He praised the steady progress in Algerian-Iranian relations, bolstered by agreements signed earlier this year, and highlighted the commonalities between the two nations as a foundation for deepening economic and trade exchanges.

Acknowledging Algeria’s honorable positions on regional and international stages, Azizi lauded its steadfast support for oppressed peoples and its commitment to the Palestinian struggle. He expressed Iran’s pride in its shared alignment with Algeria on critical global issues and affirmed the importance of continued cooperation to defend Palestinian rights and counter Zionist atrocities.

Both parties emphasized the need to invigorate parliamentary diplomacy mechanisms, including parliamentary friendship groups and mutual visits. They advocated for an active parliamentary partnership to reinforce solidarity between the Algerian and Iranian peoples and support their nations’ broader cooperation frameworks.
