Algiers, Algeria | September 22nd, 2024 —  Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, engaged in a series of pivotal diplomatic discussions with several of his counterparts on Saturday in New York, as part of his participation in the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The discussions, which were held on the sidelines of the global event, underscored Algeria’s active role in addressing regional conflicts and promoting international solidarity, particularly with the Palestinian cause.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was confirmed that Attaf met with foreign ministers from several key countries, including Egypt, Jordan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and South Sudan. His discussions with these nations highlighted Algeria’s commitment to regional stability, peace, and cooperation, in alignment with the UN’s objectives and Algeria’s strategic foreign policy interests.

During his meeting with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, Attaf emphasized the necessity of strengthening coordination on several critical issues, notably the Palestinian cause, which remains a central concern for both Algeria and Egypt. The two ministers discussed avenues to mobilize broader Arab support for Palestine at the United Nations, reflecting the urgency of unified Arab action to confront Israel’s ongoing aggression. Additionally, they explored ways to enhance bilateral and continental cooperation, laying the groundwork for key upcoming events.

Attaf’s talks with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Al-Safadi, focused on the unfolding situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in light of the Zionist entity’s genocidal war in Gaza and its escalating military campaigns across multiple fronts. Both ministers reiterated the importance of galvanizing international support for the Palestinian cause during the UNGA session. Furthermore, they discussed future opportunities to strengthen the bonds between Algeria and Jordan, while aligning their diplomatic agendas for upcoming bilateral meetings.

In a significant dialogue with the DRC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Attaf delved into the ongoing crisis in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The talks centered on exploring peaceful solutions to the conflict, aligned with the approach advocated by the UN Security Council. The two ministers also evaluated the prospects for enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on several African Union (AU) dossiers, highlighting Algeria’s constructive role within the AU framework.

Attaf underscored Algeria’s readiness to assist through capacity-building initiatives, particularly in the realm of human resource development. He also pointed to Algeria’s influential position as a member of the UN Security Council and the AU’s High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5), reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to multilateral efforts aimed at securing lasting peace in the region.
