Algeria’s Economic Reforms: IMF Forecasts 4.2% Growth

ALGIERS- Chris Geiregat, Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, has been in Algeria for a week as part of the annual consultations with the Bretton Woods institution. During his stay, Geiregat held discussions with several high-ranking state officials, including the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the Minister of Commerce and Promotion of Exports, Tayeb Zitouni.

In a press conference, Geiregat revealed that Algeria achieved a growth rate of 4.2% in December, a trend expected to be sustained throughout 2024. He attributed this positive economic outlook to the ongoing reforms in Algeria, particularly in monetary and banking legislation, the new investment code, and the national digitization strategy, which he encouraged the country to maintain.

The sustained growth, according to Geiregat, is underpinned by advancements in the hydrocarbons, industry, and construction sectors. He commended Algeria’s efforts in these areas but urged the country to intensify its focus on improving the investment climate and exploring new investment opportunities, especially in the hydrocarbons sector. Geiregat also expressed appreciation for Algerian banks’ decisions to open branches abroad to support economic operators.

Addressing foreign exchange reserves, the IMF mission chief disclosed that Algeria currently holds reserves sufficient for 14 months of imports. This indicates a robust financial position that provides a buffer against external economic challenges.

The IMF’s positive assessment aligns with Algeria’s commitment to economic reforms aimed at diversifying its economy, reducing dependency on hydrocarbons, and fostering a more conducive environment for foreign investment. As the country continues on this path, the IMF anticipates continued economic growth, making Algeria an increasingly attractive destination for investors and contributing to its overall economic resilience.
