Algiers, Algeria | June 3rd, 2024 — Education Minister Abdelhakim Belabed supervised the start of the middle school certificate (BEM) exams in El Tarf province, where he noted a significant decrease in cheating incidents.

In El Tarf province, Education Minister Abdelhakim Belabed personally oversaw the commencement of the middle school certificate (BEM) exams, demonstrating his commitment to ensuring the integrity of the examination process.

During a press briefing, Minister Belabed stated his intention to oversee similar exams in Annaba and Saïda provinces, underscoring his dedication to maintaining exam standards across the country. He emphasized that the exams began smoothly in all provinces, thanks to well-coordinated examination centers.

Minister Belabed also highlighted a noticeable reduction in cheating incidents in recent years, attributing this positive trend to the stringent measures implemented by the government since 2020. He asserted, “The decline in cheating rates can be attributed to the rigorous measures put in place by the government. Today, we can confidently say that this detrimental phenomenon is on the decline.” Belabed stressed the importance of these measures in safeguarding students’ interests and upholding the integrity of the education system. He reiterated the government’s commitment to combatting cheating, which undermines the credibility of the educational process.

This year, a total of 818,439 candidates are taking the BEM exams across 3,040 examination centers from June 3rd to 5th. In 2023, the national pass rate for the BEM exam was recorded at 60.97%.
