ALGIERS- Addressing the state of the country’s road infrastructure during a meeting in Algiers with regional directors, Minister of Public Works, Lakhdar Rakhroukh, unveiled Algeria’s impressive road network spanning 141,500 km, including 8,900 km of expressways and highways. This comprehensive network encompasses numerous engineering marvels, including 11,500 bridges and 48 tunnels.

Minister Rakhroukh attributed these achievements to various development programs initiated by the government, emphasizing the critical role of robust infrastructure in fostering economic activities and national growth. He urged regional directors to prioritize program execution while adhering to quality standards and optimizing public expenditures.

While stressing the importance of adhering to project specifications, the minister noted that ongoing projects aim to enhance the nation’s infrastructure and implement programs crucial for economic development. He highlighted significant investments in the railway sector over the past years to expand the national network, connecting various regions through railway lines.

In this regard, a comprehensive plan has been devised to modernize and electrify the railway network, with the ultimate goal of reaching 15,000 km. The minister expressed aspirations to establish a national plan connecting all regions of Algeria, fostering economic integration and development.

Furthermore, the minister outlined a new program focused on creating additional railway lines, particularly those catering to the transportation needs of phosphate from the Djebel Onk region and iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mines in the southwest. These projects are prioritized within the broader infrastructure development agenda.

In addition to railway initiatives, Algeria’s strategic plan encompasses road, highway, airport, and port infrastructure projects. These endeavors are poised to contribute significantly to the nation’s economic growth and development.
