ALGIERS- In an interview with Al Jazeera, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, discussed the recent shifts in Algeria-Spain relations, emphasizing Spain’s role and recent changes in diplomatic dynamics.

Attaf began by clarifying that Spain cannot be labeled an enemy, stating, “I could never qualify Spain as an enemy.” He acknowledged past tensions and the recall of the Algerian ambassador, attributing the situation to a significant political issue, particularly Spain’s historical role as the colonizer of Western Sahara. Attaf underscored Algeria’s insistence that Spain, given its historical responsibility, align its position with that of the European Union.

The turning point, according to Attaf, was Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly. “He changed his position, and that’s all we asked: for Spain to align itself with the European position,” said Attaf. The minister highlighted that Spain’s official stance, as reflected on its Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, has undergone a complete 180-degree shift.

Attaf concluded by noting that Algeria welcomed this change and is now prepared to resume and normalize relations with Spain, signaling a positive step forward in diplomatic ties.
