Algiers, Algeria | September 24th, 2024 — In a series of high-level diplomatic engagements, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, has reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to Arab solidarity, particularly in support of Palestine, during the annual consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This pivotal gathering coincides with the high-level week of the Assembly, where global leaders address pressing international issues.

The consultative meeting provided an opportunity for Arab ministers to synchronize their stances on key agenda items of the General Assembly, while also focusing on the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. With the Palestinian cause at the forefront, the ministers decried the ongoing genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, alongside the continuous Zionist escalation against neighboring countries, particularly Lebanon, which has been enduring aggressive Israeli actions.

In a firm show of solidarity, the ministers expressed their unequivocal support for Lebanon amidst these violations, warning of the grave repercussions such aggressions have on regional security and stability. They underscored the critical importance of a united Arab front in resisting these provocations and protecting the sovereignty and dignity of their nations.

Minister Attaf, who has been a vocal advocate for Palestine within international platforms, highlighted Algeria’s sustained efforts in the UN Security Council to rally support for the Palestinian cause. The Arab ministers collectively hailed Algeria’s leadership in advancing the Palestinian agenda and agreed to seize the opportunity presented by the upcoming high-level meeting at the UN Security Council, requested by Algeria, scheduled for September 27, 2024. This meeting aims to mobilize broader international backing for Palestine, reinforcing the global call for justice and peace.

Attaf Participates in the 19th Annual Middle East Debate in New York

Beyond his participation in the consultative meeting, Minister Attaf took part in the 19th edition of the annual academic and political debate on the Middle East, organized by the International Peace Institute. This forum, attended by prominent figures from the Arab world and Europe, facilitated a candid exchange of views on the evolving dynamics in the Middle East and explored pathways toward a just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian issue. Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s firm position on the necessity of a fair settlement for Palestine, a cornerstone of peace in the region.

Bilateral Meetings with Key International Figures

On the sidelines of his participation in the UN General Assembly, Minister Attaf held a series of bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and international figures, furthering Algeria’s diplomatic outreach and strengthening ties with friendly nations. His discussions included key talks with Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie, Burundian Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro, Cape Verdean Foreign Minister Rui Alberto De Figueiredo Soares, and Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos.

The meeting with his Tunisian counterpart focused on the exceptional dynamics of fraternity and cooperation that mark the relationship between Algeria and Tunisia. Both ministers reviewed upcoming bilateral events at the ministerial level, emphasizing the shared commitment of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed to elevate their nations’ ties to new heights of excellence. Their discussions reaffirmed the deep-rooted solidarity between the two countries, aiming to further strengthen these historic bonds.

During his dialogue with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie, the two sides consulted on a range of issues related to the African Union (AU), with particular focus on the preparations for the upcoming Algeria-Ethiopia Joint Commission. This platform is seen as an essential mechanism for deepening cooperation between the two countries across various sectors.

In his meeting with Burundian Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro, Minister Attaf explored avenues to reinforce bilateral relations and discussed matters of mutual interest at the continental level. Both ministers expressed their shared vision for enhanced collaboration, particularly within the framework of the AU, where Algeria continues to play a leading role in promoting peace and development across Africa.

The bilateral talks with Cape Verde’s Foreign Minister Rui Alberto De Figueiredo Soares centered on the upcoming milestones within the AU and strategies for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Cape Verde. Both ministers expressed a commitment to fostering closer ties in the spirit of African unity and solidarity.

In a significant exchange with Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, the two ministers shared views and analyses on pressing international and regional issues. They also discussed potential areas for bolstering bilateral relations between Algeria and Cyprus, underscoring the importance of Mediterranean cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

Advancing Sustainable Development Goals with ESCWA

Minister Attaf’s diplomatic outreach extended to his meeting with Rola Abdulla Dashti, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). This meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly in light of the outcomes of Dashti’s visit to Algeria in May 2024. Both sides explored strategies for deepening collaboration in areas such as economic development, social progress, and environmental sustainability, with a view to advancing regional stability and prosperity.

As Minister Attaf continues his robust diplomatic engagements in New York, Algeria’s influence on the global stage remains steadfast, particularly in championing the rights of the Palestinian people and advocating for peaceful solutions to the region’s most pressing conflicts. His discussions with international counterparts reaffirm Algeria’s role as a key player in regional and global diplomacy, committed to fostering cooperation, peace, and development across the Arab world and beyond.
