Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, took part in a debate in New York addressing the implications of wars and the Geneva Conventions. The event was co-organized by Algeria and Norway in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Peace Institute, as stated by the Ministry.
The discussion focused on exploring effective strategies to ensure better compliance with the four Geneva Conventions, established 75 years ago, especially in light of the blatant violations observed in numerous global conflicts. During the debate, Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law. He highlighted the profound challenges that impede the enforcement of the Geneva Conventions in various conflict zones, particularly pointing out the genocidal war against the Palestinian people, the escalating violence in Lebanon, and the broader regional turmoil. Furthermore, he addressed the severe humanitarian crises affecting civilians across Africa, who continue to endure immense suffering amidst these adversities.
Attaf’s participation underscores Algeria’s proactive stance as an advocate for humanitarian principles on the international stage. He emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts to uphold the tenets of the Geneva Conventions and protect vulnerable populations in conflict-affected areas.
