The Ministry of National Defense affirmed in a statement that “General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the ANP, received in an audience on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the ANP headquarters, retired Colonel Andrei Pavlenko, former sapper and deminer of the former USSR, who is visiting Algeria.”

Colonel Pavlenko was awarded the prestigious El-Achir Medal by the President of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Minister of National Defense, during his state visit to the Russian Federation in June 2023. This accolade symbolizes his significant contribution to humanitarian missions in Algeria following its independence.

During the meeting, General Chanegriha expressed his appreciation for Colonel Pavlenko’s pivotal role in the demining operations that cleared mines inherited from the colonial era along Algeria’s eastern and western borders. “I extend a warm welcome to you and your delegation to the ANP headquarters. I hope your visit to Algeria will be productive and enjoyable, allowing you to reminisce about your contributions to our country’s post-independence efforts,” noted General Chanegriha.

He further acknowledged the crucial support provided by teams from the former USSR, who not only participated directly in demining operations but also imparted valuable knowledge and training to Algerian demining teams. This collaboration significantly contributed to the capabilities and expertise of the young Algerian army at that time.

Reflecting on the broader bilateral relations between Algeria and Russia, General Chanegriha emphasized the substantial development in these ties, particularly with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. “Since our independence in 1962, Algeria and Russia have fostered multifaceted bilateral cooperation, including significant contributions like those made during the demining operations,” he underscored.

Colonel Pavlenko expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him during his visit, highlighting that his time in Algeria during the 1960s had left indelible memories of humanitarian service and camaraderie. He reiterated his deep appreciation for Algeria’s recognition of the contributions made by international partners during challenging times.

The meeting wrapped up with General Chanegriha honoring Colonel Pavlenko for his enduring friendship and contributions to Algeria’s humanitarian efforts. The event underscored the ongoing friendship between Algeria and Russia, built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared historical experiences.
