The Speaker reiterates Algeria’s unwavering commitment to a legitimate, UN-supervised self-determination process for the Sahrawi people, condemning attempts to undermine international law.
Algiers, Algeria | April 10th, 2025 — In a strong statement issued on Thursday, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, reaffirmed Algeria’s firm stance on the Western Sahara issue, emphasizing that a fair and transparent referendum, under the supervision of the United Nations, is the only viable path to a just resolution.
“The Council of the Nation renews its firm belief that the Western Sahara issue can only find a durable and just solution through the exercise of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, via a fair and transparent referendum, under the supervision and responsibility of the United Nations,” read the official communiqué, echoed by the APS.
The Council also condemned the recent stance taken by the United States Department of State, which, according to Goudjil, deviates from international legality. The communiqué underscored that such a position is particularly concerning coming from a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which bears the responsibility of upholding international law.
“The confirmation by the U.S. State Department of its position regarding the Sahrawi cause is a deviation from international law, which should be respected by a permanent member of the UN Security Council,” the statement asserted.
Moreover, the communiqué highlighted that this shift in U.S. policy would only bolster Morocco’s colonial ambitions, granting it hollow victories that fail to change the undeniable historical truths. It reaffirmed that history will continue to reject colonialism in all its forms.
“This position will only serve to fuel Morocco’s colonial ambitions, granting them illusory victories that cannot alter historical truths, nor divert the inevitable course of history, which rejects and despises colonialism in all its forms,” it read.
The Council of the Nation emphasized that this development would also hinder international efforts to promote a UN-led resolution, further denying the Sahrawi people their legitimate right to self-determination and independence. The communiqué reiterated Algeria’s support for the UN’s 1991 settlement plan, which offers a legal framework for resolving the dispute through a democratic and binding process.
“This position undermines international efforts to promote UN-led solutions and obstructs the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, as stipulated in the UN resolution framework, including the 1991 settlement plan,” the communiqué continued.
Referring to Algeria’s official position, as expressed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement released on April 9, 2025, the Council stressed that the Sahrawi question is a “unique and incontestable legal matter.” It emphasized that this is fundamentally a decolonization issue, as affirmed by all relevant international and regional resolutions.
“This is a case of decolonization, as recognized by all pertinent international and regional resolutions,” the statement concluded, reaffirming that the issue is firmly placed on the agenda of the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, and remains central to its resolutions that uphold the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
With this powerful statement, the Council of the Nation has once again made clear Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the Sahrawi cause, affirming that peace and justice in Western Sahara will only be achieved through a transparent, inclusive, and internationally supervised referendum, ensuring the inalienable rights of the Sahrawi people to determine their future free from colonial interference.
