Algiers- In the council of ministers meeting, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune unveiled a series of decisions aimed at revitalizing the higher education sector and strengthening scientific research in Algeria. Among the pivotal announcements was a comprehensive study to assess the viability of a return to the “Classic Bachelor Degree” system, marking a potential shift from the current “LMD” system.
The Council of Ministers’ press release highlighted several key initiatives that President Tebboune is championing to reshape Algeria’s higher education landscape.
- National Higher School of Cyber Security: In a bid to enhance national security, President Tebboune has directed the establishment of a National Higher School of Cyber Security in collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense. This cooperative effort aims to bolster the nation’s cyber defense capabilities and protect vital infrastructure from emerging digital threats.
- Reconsidering the “Classic Bachelor Degree” System: One of the most significant announcements was the launch of an extensive study evaluating the potential return to the “Classic Bachelor Degree” system. This move signifies a potential transition away from the current “LMD” system, with the goal of exploring alternative approaches to higher education. Such a transition could have far-reaching implications for the structure and focus of Algerian university programs.
- University Cities Approach: President Tebboune has directed the development of a new roadmap for the distribution of universities based on a “university cities” concept. This approach seeks to preserve the principles of solidarity and national dimension while enhancing the training of Algerian university professionals. The strategy aims to decentralize higher education, making it more accessible to students across the country.
- International Engagement: The President has instructed the Ministers of Higher Education and Start-ups to compile a list of top companies for a fact-finding mission to China, South Korea, and the United States. This mission will allow Algerian officials to glean insights and best practices from these countries in various sectors, promoting international cooperation and knowledge exchange.
During the council of ministers meeting, President Tebboune commended the pivotal role played by higher education executives in elevating the sector to new heights. He acknowledged their contributions to scientific research and digitalization, particularly through the historic implementation of a “paperless” university startup. This shift to digitalization has not only streamlined administrative processes but has also contributed significantly to the nation’s economic growth.
The President’s vision for Algeria’s higher education system seeks to empower the country’s youth with the skills and knowledge needed to drive innovation, economic growth, and national security. As the study on the “Classic License” system progresses and other initiatives are implemented, Algeria’s higher education sector may be poised for a transformative journey into the future.
President Tebboune’s commitment to higher education and scientific research underscores the government’s determination to equip Algerian students and professionals with the tools required to excel in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The nation eagerly awaits the results of the feasibility study and the subsequent steps towards reshaping its higher education system for the better.
