Algeria’s Initiative: UN Security Council Calls for Independent Investigation into Gaza Mass Graves

Algiers- Algeria, May 12, 2024 – The Security Council unanimously adopted a press statement proposed by Algeria on Friday, urging immediate, independent, thorough, transparent, and impartial investigations into the mass graves being uncovered in the Gaza Strip. These graves reveal the grim reality of the killing machine operated by the Zionist entity.
This adoption follows a closed-door debate convened by Algeria last Tuesday on the mass graves in Gaza.
Expressing deep concern, the Council members highlighted reports of mass graves discovered in Nasser and Chifa hospitals in Gaza and surrounding areas, where several hundred bodies, including women, children, and elderly individuals, were buried.
The importance of allowing investigators unrestricted access to all mass grave sites in Gaza was emphasized by the Council members.
Furthermore, the Council stressed that all parties must immediately and fully implement Security Council resolutions 2728 (2024), 2720 (2023), and 2712 (2023) to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Once again, Algeria has succeeded in proposing a Council document that has garnered the consensus of all its members, thus increasing international pressure on the Zionist occupier, which can no longer evade its responsibilities.
It is worth noting that the adoption of this declaration followed tireless efforts and intensive consultations and negotiations conducted by Algeria in New York with the Security Council members as well as with the Palestinian side. During these consultations, Algeria insisted that investigations into these heinous crimes be immediate, independent, comprehensive, transparent, and impartial.
Despite objections from some and maneuvers by the representatives of the occupier in the corridors of the UN, fearing calls for accountability that tighten the noose around the perpetrators of the occupation day by day, Algeria persisted in its position, compelling all members to acquiesce to the strength of the argument and the justice of the cause.
