Algiers, Algeria | January 1st, 2024 — In a new stride for Algeria’s agricultural trade sector, the Directorate of Trade and Export Promotion in Khenchela oversaw the export of 500 tons of locally produced red onions to Libya on Wednesday, marking the first day of the new year. This initiative highlights Algeria’s ambitions to solidify its presence in regional and international markets.
The operation, celebrated as the first export activity of 2025 on a national scale, commenced with the shipment of 40 tons of red onions. These were transported via cargo vehicles destined for Libya, crossing Algeria’s southern border. The multi-phase operation reflects meticulous planning and coordination among various stakeholders to ensure its success.
Speaking to Echorouk El-Youmi, Ms. Farida Taâkout, Head of the Information Cell at the Khenchela Directorate of Trade and Export Promotion, underscored the significance of this initiative. “Under the direct supervision of the Wali of Khenchela and in collaboration with the Khenchela office of the Algerian Exporters Federation and the Provincial Secretariat of the Union of Traders and Craftsmen, we have facilitated all administrative procedures and created the necessary conditions for local investors to export their products,” she stated.
This achievement builds on Khenchela’s growing reputation as a hub for high-quality agricultural exports. Last year, the region successfully exported various agricultural products, including apples, olives, and beans, to both African and European markets.
Driving Economic Integration and Agricultural Growth
Mr. Merdas, the head of the Khenchela office of the Algerian Exporters Federation, emphasized the federation’s ongoing commitment to promoting local products in international markets. “Our objective is to connect local producers with global buyers, fostering international trade agreements that benefit both parties. We have seen tremendous demand for Khenchela’s agricultural products, including apples, olives, confectionery, and now red onions. These products, celebrated for their superior quality, have gained the attention of international economic operators,” Merdas explained.
The selection of farmers and producers for these ventures follows a rigorous process to ensure they meet international standards. The federation also actively supports them in navigating export logistics, ensuring seamless operations.
The red onion export marks a milestone in Khenchela’s strategy to diversify its agricultural offerings and tap into lucrative markets. By leveraging its fertile agricultural lands and skilled farming practices, Khenchela has positioned itself as a leader in Algeria’s export landscape.
Setting the Stage for Broader International Outreach
This recent success also sets a precedent for further growth in Algeria’s agricultural export sector. The involvement of Khenchela’s local authorities, traders, and craftspeople highlights a collaborative approach to economic development. By facilitating the export process and ensuring that farmers and producers receive the necessary support, Algeria is laying the groundwork for sustained growth in the agricultural sector.
The initiative aligns with Algeria’s broader economic goals of diversifying its exports beyond hydrocarbons. With increasing interest from African and European markets, Algeria is strategically poised to capitalize on its agricultural wealth.
