Algeria’s Mansouri Stresses Urgency of Implementing South Sudan’s Revitalized Peace Agreement

Algiers, Algeria | January 17th, 2025 — During a high-profile meeting of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on South Sudan held in Juba, Algeria’s Secretary of State for African Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, emphasized the critical need for the comprehensive and effective implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement as a fundamental step towards achieving lasting peace, stability, and national reconciliation in South Sudan.

Speaking on behalf of Algeria, Mansouri underlined that the full activation of the agreement’s provisions is essential not only for consolidating enduring peace but also for creating the necessary conditions for sustainable development and improving the quality of life for the South Sudanese people. She reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the peace process, highlighting the country’s commitment to African solidarity in conflict resolution.

The meeting, which gathered senior representatives of regional and international stakeholders, aimed to evaluate the progress of the peace agreement’s implementation and strengthen coordination with regional and global partners to support long-term stability in South Sudan. Among the prominent participants were representatives from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), alongside ambassadors from various African nations accredited in South Sudan.

A key component of the discussions involved a direct meeting between the C5 delegation and South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny. The talks focused on addressing the persistent challenges hindering the full implementation of the peace accord. Both parties acknowledged the importance of enhanced cooperation among stakeholders to eliminate barriers, accelerate the peace process, and ensure security and stability throughout the nation.

Mansouri’s intervention reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to advancing African-driven solutions to conflicts, emphasizing the urgency of collective responsibility and sustained diplomatic engagement to safeguard South Sudan’s path toward peace and national unity.
