Algeria’s Message to Washington After Its Veto: A Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

Algiers, February 20, 2024 – Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Ambassador to the United Nations, reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to the Palestinian plight in the aftermath of the recent setback at the Security Council regarding the prompt cessation of hostilities in Gaza. Bendjama emphasized that the Security Council’s inability to achieve this does not exempt it from its obligations toward the innocent Palestinian population.
In his post-Security Council vote statement, Bendjama underscored that “those hindering the prompt ceasefire in Gaza should reassess their policies and calculations, as the erroneous decisions made today will yield violence and instability in our region and the world tomorrow.” This remark was explicitly directed at the United States following its veto of the Algerian resolution.
“Our message today to you is that the international community must respond to demands for ceasefire, targeting Palestinians, by calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities,” Bendjama declared. “Those who obstruct it must reconsider their policies and calculations because today’s wrong decisions will reap violence and instability in our region and the world tomorrow.”
Bendjama emphasized the pivotal role of the Security Council as the arbiter of international legitimacy, lamenting its recurrent failure to fulfill its obligations. Additionally, the Algerian diplomat underscored the necessity for the Zionist entity to adhere to the provisional measures mandated by the International Court of Justice.
In the same context, he noted the inadequacy of Resolutions 2712 and 2720 in meeting the minimum aid requirements for Palestinians, emphasizing the urgent need to halt aggression and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout Gaza.
In conclusion, Bendjama addressed the stakeholders of the Security Council, affirming, “Tonight, we mourn our martyrs in Palestine, and Algeria will stand once more tomorrow, representing the Arab and Islamic nation and the forces of freedom worldwide, bearing with us the spirits of thousands of innocents taken by the Zionist occupier without consequences or retribution.” He vowed to reopen the doors of the Security Council to halt the bloodshed in Palestine, asserting, “We will persist until this Council fulfills its complete obligations and demands a ceasefire, for we possess spirits that never tire and a resolve that never wavers.”
Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause echoes its longstanding commitment to justice, peace, and international law. As the world watches events unfold in Gaza, Algeria remains steadfast in its advocacy for Palestinian rights and the pursuit of a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian cause.
