Algeria’s Meziane Urges Journalists to Uphold Accuracy and Responsibility Amid Rising Threats of Disinformation and AI-Driven Manipulation

Algerian Minister of Communication Calls for Professionalism and Ethical Integrity in National Press

Algiers, Algeria | February 24th, 2025 — Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, issued a firm call for professionalism and ethical responsibility within the national press, emphasizing the critical need for accuracy, source verification, and strict adherence to journalistic ethics. Speaking in Algiers during a debate organized by the National Organization of Algerian Sports Journalists (ONJSA), and attended by Minister of Sports Walid Sadi, Meziane underscored the growing challenges posed by misinformation and the weaponization of artificial intelligence in media manipulation.

Addressing members of the national press, the minister insisted that journalistic principles must be upheld universally, stating, “Professionalism, credibility, and ethical reporting are non-negotiable. These standards apply to all media institutions without exception.” He warned against the dangers of defamation, stressing that such practices violate the core tenets of responsible journalism.

In a stern caution to journalists, Meziane emphasized the necessity of rigorous source verification, particularly in an era where deliberate disinformation campaigns threaten public trust. “We are witnessing a time when malicious actors intentionally spread falsehoods to mislead the public. Some even exploit artificial intelligence to distort reality. This is why journalists must exercise extreme vigilance and refuse to take information at face value,” he asserted.

The minister reiterated that the government remains committed to fostering a robust and responsible press sector, recognizing its role in shaping public opinion and supporting national development. “The Algerian state supports the advancement of the national press, fully aware of its power in contributing to the realization of major national projects,” Meziane affirmed.

Underscoring the importance of continuous professional development, the minister stressed that journalistic training should not be limited to university education but must extend to regular workshops and specialized programs for working journalists. “The formation of skilled, ethical journalists begins in academic institutions but must be reinforced through ongoing training. Only through this commitment can we ensure a press corps that is both competent and principled,” he stated.
