Algiers, Algeria | January 20th, 2025 — Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, has arrived in Rome to participate in the inaugural ministerial meeting of the countries involved in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SouthH2 Corridor) project. The high-profile summit, slated for Tuesday, brings together key energy stakeholders from Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Germany, and Austria, in addition to Switzerland and the European Commission, serving as observers. This meeting, held at the invitation of Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and Italian Minister for Environmental Transition and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, is poised to serve as a pivotal step in fostering regional cooperation for clean energy development.

Minister Arkab is accompanied by a distinguished delegation, including Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassaa, the CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, respectively, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The gathering underscores the increasing emphasis placed on renewable energy and green hydrogen as critical components of global energy transitions.

The summit’s primary goal is to bolster collaboration in renewable energy and green hydrogen development, positioning the Southern Hydrogen Corridor as a cornerstone of the participants’ energy transition strategies. The initiative is pivotal in supporting the shift toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy and enhancing energy security across the region. As the global demand for clean energy sources intensifies, the Southern Hydrogen Corridor represents a unique opportunity to position Algeria and its regional partners as leaders in the emerging green hydrogen market.

Minister Arkab’s participation further highlights Algeria’s unwavering commitment to advancing international cooperation in the renewable energy sector. The ministry statement emphasized that Algeria views its role in the SouthH2 Corridor project as essential to addressing the dual challenges of climate change and global energy security. Algeria’s extensive renewable energy potential and its strategic location make it a key player in the development of green hydrogen projects that will shape the future of energy in Europe and Africa.

The event also coincides with the business forum scheduled on the sidelines of the summit, which will bring together companies from the involved nations to discuss the practical steps and timelines for realizing the Southern Hydrogen Corridor. This forum will focus on establishing a clear roadmap for the future stages of the ambitious project, facilitating dialogue between the private sector and governmental entities, and ensuring effective collaboration toward shared energy goals.

The Southern Hydrogen Corridor project was further solidified in October 2024 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Oran, Algeria. The MoU sets the foundation for the development of green hydrogen infrastructure and trade, with the potential to revolutionize the energy markets of the participating countries.
