Algiers, Algeria | November 08th, 2024 — In a detailed session before Algeria’s People’s National Assembly on Thursday, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal announced significant strides in advancing public water supply and wastewater treatment projects throughout the country. Emphasizing his commitment to improving Algeria’s water infrastructure, Minister Derbal affirmed that his department is actively working to speed up the implementation of local projects, issuing strict directives to optimize resources and workforce allocation to ensure timely progress.

One of the primary projects discussed was the potable water supply system in Guelma province, which will draw from the Hammam Debagh treatment plant. The project aims to serve several municipalities, including Bouhamdane, Bordj Sabath, Aïn Reggada, and Oued Zenati, as well as Ras El Aioun village. Minister Derbal reported that 10,400 meters of pipeline have already been laid out of a planned 11,000 meters, with the fourth phase of the project currently underway to ensure its completion.

In response to questions from MP Youcef Berchid of the Movement of Society for Peace, Minister Derbal disclosed that the wastewater treatment plant project for Béni Ounif in Béchar province is set for revival. Following the receipt of supplementary studies this month, the project will prioritize environmentally friendly treatment methods due to the plant’s proximity to residential areas, aiming to minimize ecological impact.

Additionally, Minister Derbal announced the completion of the wastewater treatment facility in L’Hammar, also in Béchar province. Preparations are now underway to transfer operations to the National Sanitation Office, with the plant expected to commence service by December.

On the ambitious project of transporting water over a 264 km distance from the Tigraouine field in Timiaouine (Bordj Badji Mokhtar province) to the municipality of Tinzaouatine (In Guezzam province), Minister Derbal confirmed that it is currently under review by the National Equipment and Development Fund of the Ministry of Finance. Given the project’s substantial commitment, estimated at over 10 billion DZD, administrative procedures will be promptly initiated once approval is secured.

In another major project, Derbal addressed the completion of the Oued El Ghergour dam in Sétif province. He assured MP Salah Jaghloul that the dam is already registered in the sectoral program and will proceed as soon as financial allocations are finalized.

These projects reflect Algeria’s strategic efforts to reinforce water security and enhance public utility services across its regions, fulfilling a crucial commitment to sustainable development and community welfare.
