President Tebboune Hails Strategic Water Infrastructure as a Symbol of Victory and Self-Sufficiency

Algiers, Algeria | February 26th, 2025 — In a landmark achievement for Algeria’s water security and strategic development, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated the Koudiet Eddraouche desalination plant in the wilaya of El Tarf on Wednesday, hailing it as a monumental success that embodies the resilience and triumph of the Algerian nation. The President underscored that the recently completed desalination megaprojects in the wilayas of Oran, Tipasa, El Tarf, Boumerdès, and Béjaïa constitute a national pride, reinforcing Algeria’s march towards water sovereignty and self-sufficiency.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the workers, engineers, and officials who played a pivotal role in bringing these grand projects to fruition,” President Tebboune declared in his speech following a comprehensive briefing on the construction and operational phases of the Koudiet Eddraouche plant. He specifically commended the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, and the CEO of Sonatrach, along with all national entities and experts involved in executing this strategic initiative.

A Unifying Vision: From West to East, A Nation Securing Its Water Future

Emphasizing the monumental significance of these megaprojects, President Tebboune declared:

“These projects are a badge of honor for victorious Algeria. I hope we will soon complete this ambitious program with the inauguration of the Cap Djinet desalination plant in Boumerdès and another facility in Béjaïa. With these final steps, we will have successfully established an interconnected water security network, stretching from the westernmost regions to the farthest east, passing through the heart of the country.”

Highlighting the unparalleled scale and financial commitment invested in these projects, he remarked:

“Such comprehensive and large-scale initiatives are rarely found elsewhere, either in terms of financial resources allocated or the sheer magnitude of execution. These projects will go down in history.”

The President also lauded the synergy and unwavering dedication of Algerian professionals who worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to ensure the successful completion of these plants, achieving a remarkable level of coordination and operational excellence.

A National Strategy for Water Security

The Koudiet Eddraouche desalination plant, built with cutting-edge technology and executed entirely by Algerian expertise, stands as a strategic lifeline for multiple eastern wilayas, including El Tarf, Annaba, Skikda, and Guelma. With a daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters—equivalent to 300 million liters—the facility is set to significantly bolster potable water supply, reducing reliance on conventional water sources and ensuring sustainable access to clean water for millions of citizens.

This milestone is part of a broader national vision aimed at mitigating climate change-induced water scarcity and fortifying Algeria’s resilience against fluctuating hydrological conditions. By integrating desalination technology into its national infrastructure, Algeria reinforces its commitment to long-term water security, positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable resource management.

A Grand Inauguration Attended by High-Ranking Officials

The inauguration ceremony of this vital infrastructure was attended by top state and military officials, including:

  • General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army, and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense.
  • Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.
  • Brahim Merad, Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Regional Planning.
  • Taha Derbal, Minister of Hydraulics.

The event also brought together high-ranking executives from Algeria’s leading public companies, local authorities, and members of the military, reaffirming the strategic national importance of the project.

As Algeria accelerates its industrial and infrastructure development, these projects serve as a blueprint for the country’s future trajectory. President Tebboune reaffirmed his determination to push forward with other major development projects, ensuring Algeria’s continued economic sovereignty and technological advancement.

With a network of desalination plants spanning the country, Algeria is not only securing its vital water resources but also demonstrating its capacity to execute large-scale infrastructure projects with indigenous expertise, marking a new era of self-reliance and national achievement.
