Algiers, March 29, 2024 – During a plenary session dedicated to oral questions at the Council of the Nation, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, discussed the progress of Algeria’s pharmaceutical industry.
Minister Aoun emphasized that Algeria stands as one of the primary pharmaceutical producers in Africa, boasting 203 pharmaceutical production companies covering 70% of the domestic market’s needs.
Moreover, the minister revealed that pharmaceutical exports reached $12.6 million in 2023 and are projected to reach $17 million in 2024.
In response to a question from Senator Fouad Sebouta of the National Liberation Front party regarding the ministry’s roadmap for establishing a chemical and petrochemical industry, Minister Aoun outlined the ministry’s strategy.
“The ministry’s strategy in the chemical industry, aligned with government objectives, revolves around assessing available resources and market trends to meet national and international demands,” stated Minister Aoun.
He further elaborated that the sector’s strategy involves diversifying production and investing in research and development to enhance international competitiveness while ensuring sustainable development and considering the environmental impact of chemical production.
According to the minister, the sector has effectively begun to develop the chemical industries to meet growing national and international needs and reduce the import bill for basic chemical products.
This strategic approach has yielded tangible results in various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, plastics, industrial paint, detergents, cosmetics, and others, transitioning Algeria from an importer to a self-sufficient or exporting nation.
Regarding petrochemical industries, Minister Aoun underscored their strategic importance alongside pharmaceutical and energy sectors.
He highlighted Sonatrach’s current investments in polypropylene and nitrogenous fertilizers production and mentioned that his sector will explore the possibility of collaborating with the energy and mining sectors in producing certain metals, particularly rare earth elements.
Algeria’s efforts in developing its pharmaceutical and chemical industries reflect its commitment to economic diversification, self-sufficiency, and international competitiveness while contributing to the country’s overall economic growth and development.
