Algiers, Algeria | July 3rd, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated the Douera football stadium in Algiers on Wednesday, a significant addition to Algeria’s sports infrastructure.
Honoring a National Hero
The stadium is named after Ali Ammar, known as “Ali La Pointe,” a martyr of the Algerian War of Independence. Its management will be entrusted to MC Alger (MCA), coinciding with the President’s working and inspection visit to the Algiers province.
A State-of-the-Art Facility
Spanning 38.3 hectares, the 40,000-seat Douera Stadium features a presidential and VIP lounge, a press area, administrative offices, player accommodations on the second and third floors, control rooms, and a modern conference hall. Additionally, a giant screen at the main entrance enhances the stadium’s prominence. The facility also includes a large-capacity parking area and a helipad for emergencies and official delegations. The stadium’s construction was managed by the Chinese firm Zhejiang Construction Investment Group Corporation (ZCIGC) following a tender process initiated in early 2008.
A Centennial Gift to MCA
The construction faced delays between 2012 and 2016 but was completed following President Tebboune’s directive in September 2021 to transfer all major sports infrastructure projects to the Ministry of Housing, Urbanism, and the City for effective oversight. In August 2021, President Tebboune announced that MCA would manage the Douera Stadium as part of its centennial celebration. This decision was formalized by a presidential decree in October 2023.
Historic Militantism and Sporting Success
Recognizing MCA’s historic contribution to the Algerian War of Independence and its century-long role in promoting national sports and developing young talents, the decree emphasized the club’s right to manage Douera Stadium and its facilities. The stadium hosted a “test match” on June 14 between MCA and MC Oran’s reserve teams, marking its operational readiness.
Enhancing Algeria’s Sporting Capabilities
The Douera Stadium joins other major sports facilities like the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki and the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran. These additions, along with the refurbishment of several other sports venues, position Algeria as a nation capable of hosting major continental and international sporting events, significantly advancing its modern infrastructure.
