Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2024 — In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential campaign, the El-Bina movement, headed by Abdelkader Bengrina, has initiated a colloquium aimed at rallying and consulting with Algeria’s elite. The goal is to develop a comprehensive report on development policies to be presented to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune upon the announcement of his candidacy.

Colloquium on National Roles and Responsibilities

With the campaign period just a month away, El-Bina organized an event titled “Algerian Elites and the 2024 Presidential Election: National Roles and Responsibilities.” The colloquium aimed to mobilize and engage the elite in discussions about the future directions of the country, focusing on economic development, international relations, and national security.

Bengrina’s Address to the Elites

During the event, Bengrina emphasized the importance of the active participation of Algerian elites in both the electoral process and beyond. He highlighted the need for enhanced dialogue among the elites, political classes, authorities, and the general populace to ensure a holistic approach to formulating national policies. Bengrina criticized the historical marginalization of elites by politicians, who often dismissed them as theoretical and disconnected from practical realities.

“We, irresponsible politicians, tended to label these elites as disengaged and out of touch with realities,” Bengrina admitted. He called for a paradigm shift where elites are actively involved in shaping the future direction of the country.

Recognition and Future Collaboration

Bengrina clarified that the El-Bina movement does not claim exclusive understanding of national challenges. Instead, he praised the “discreet but vital role of the elites in national successes, despite ongoing obstacles and marginalization.” In a bid to appeal to his audience, Bengrina likened the political mission of El-Bina to the religious roles of muezzins and imams, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in the same way that religious leaders call the faithful to prayer.

He stressed the necessity of a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders to effectively address the country’s needs and strengthen social and political bonds.

Moving Forward

This colloquium represents a strategic move by El-Bina to integrate the expertise and insights of Algeria’s elite into the broader political discourse. By fostering a collaborative environment, the movement aims to play a significant role in shaping the future of Algeria, ensuring that the voices of the nation’s brightest minds are heard and heeded in the formulation of key policies and strategies.
