Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 –  Calls for active citizen participation in the forthcoming presidential election resonate widely throughout Algeria, with various political entities, such as the FLN, ANR, and the El Moustakbal Front echoing unified voices emphasizing the importance of this democratic exercise. These collective calls stress the critical nature of the electoral event within the context of both regional and international intricacies.

In a recent address on national radio, Belkacem Sahli, the Secretary-General of the National Republican Alliance (ANR), urged citizens to mobilize for the presidential election scheduled for September 7. Sahli underscored that electoral participation is a cornerstone of democracy, with each vote representing an exercise of popular sovereignty. “We call on Algerians to vote massively on September 7 to elect their president and exercise their sovereignty,” he stated, emphasizing the civic and democratic essence of the electoral process.

Reflecting on his past support for the fifth term of the late President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Sahli clarified that he had advocated for a generational transition term at that time, both in 2014 and later. He asserted that he would continue to advocate for this idea in 2024 or 2029 if the generational transition did not occur.

Regarding his endorsement of the presidential program, Sahli outlined that his support would be contingent upon its alignment with his convictions. “If I agree with this program, I will give it my full support; otherwise, I will play a constructive role in the opposition,” he affirmed.

For his part, Abdelkrim Benmbarek, the head of the FLN, emphasized the pivotal significance of the upcoming presidential election as a vital step in solidifying the foundations of the Algerian state. Benmbarek urged active participation from all political factions to counter what he termed as “skeptics” and thwart “conspiracies directed against Algeria.”

Underlining the cohesion and determination of his party for the upcoming election, Benmbarek asserted that “the FLN would play the role of a locomotive, given its leadership position.”

He praised the President’s commitment to the Algerian people, particularly in amending the constitution to reinforce democratic practices, support youth, and safeguard national sovereignty. Benmbarek also expressed genuine support for the presidential program, describing it as a “clear position.”

Similarly, Fateh Boutbig, President of the El Moustakbal Front, delivered a speech in Annaba on Saturday, calling for political engagement commensurate with Algeria’s current momentum in all sectors. He emphasized that this national dynamism aimed to “strengthen the economy and ensure the country’s sovereignty, while fostering social cohesion to preserve achievements.” Boutbig urged the political class to actively participate in this dynamic by promoting social awareness and cultivating a new generation determined to preserve and enhance achievements.

Moreover, Boutbig highlighted the “numerous achievements in various fields,” urging acknowledgment of them. He stressed the necessity of robust participation in the upcoming presidential election as a “guarantee of support for national institutions.”
