Algiers, Algeria | September 2nd, 2024 — The opening day of the Algerian presidential election, slated for September 7, has witnessed significant voter engagement and commendable organizational efforts across several key international locations. Algerian nationals residing in Northern Italy, Tunisia, and Spain have shown notable participation, reflecting the effectiveness of logistical arrangements and coordination by local consulates.

Italy: Strong Participation and Efficient Polling Arrangements

In Northern Italy, the Consulate General in Milan reported a highly successful start to the voting process. Consul General Adel Talbi praised the substantial turnout, which he attributed to well-coordinated logistics and collaboration with local Italian authorities, including mayors and security officials. The Milan consular district, which encompasses 3,790 of the 6,737 registered voters in Italy, is served by five polling stations, including two mobile units. This setup ensures that voters are accommodated efficiently. The broader Italian polling infrastructure includes twelve stations across approximately 27 cities with significant Algerian communities, and an additional station in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tunisia: Effective Organization and High Voter Turnout

The voting process in Tunisia also commenced smoothly, with nearly 16,000 Algerian voters distributed among three major centers: the Consulate General in Tunis, and the consulates in Kef and Gafsa. Consul General Nasreddine Laaraba reported a robust turnout, with voting hours extending from 08:00 to 19:00 daily until Saturday. The Tunis consulate has established nine voting stations, including eight fixed and one mobile, supported by 63 staff members. The Kef and Gafsa consulates have similarly organized multiple voting stations to facilitate voter access. Nasreddine Dakhli, the delegate of the National Independent Electoral Authority (ANIE) in Tunis, confirmed that the first day of voting proceeded smoothly, with high turnout and comprehensive resource mobilization. Nedjmeddine Sifi, ANIE’s coordinator for the sixth zone (Africa + Maghreb), emphasized effective coordination with the consulates to ensure a successful electoral process.

Spain: Increased Turnout and Accessible Voting Solutions

In Spain, the consulates in Alicante and Valencia reported increasing voter turnout on the election’s opening day. Consul Djamel Benkerour highlighted that all necessary human and material resources were deployed to facilitate smooth voting operations. In Valencia, the voting station, serving 2,555 voters, is efficiently managed by seven staff members and observers. Transportation services have been provided to assist voters from remote areas. Alicante has set up seven voting stations for a total of 10,070 voters, including 194 new registrants. Proxy voting arrangements have also been made for those unable to vote in person, and awareness efforts have included meetings with the Algerian ambassador to address community concerns and improve the voting experience.

Overall, the presidential election is demonstrating strong engagement and effective organizational measures across these international locations. The successful execution of these measures highlights the commitment of the Algerian community abroad to participate in the democratic process and underscores the effective collaboration between consulates, local authorities, and ANIE.
