Algiers, Algeria | May 26, 2024 — With the Algerian presidential election just three months away, the political scene is abuzz with activity. The announcements of candidacies by Zoubida Assoul, Belkacem Sahli, and Louisa Hanoune, coupled with El Bina’s endorsement of Abdelmadjid Tebboune for a second term, have set the stage for a competitive race. Adding to the excitement, Abdelaali Hassani Chérif, leader of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), has officially been named the party’s candidate for the upcoming September 7th presidential election. Simultaneously, the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS) has confirmed its participation in the election, while the National Democratic Rally (RND) has issued mixed signals regarding its strategy.

FFS Marks Its Return

The FFS, Algeria’s oldest opposition party, has announced its return to the presidential arena after years of boycott since 1999. This decision was made to “propose a credible political alternative” and to “strengthen the foundations of state institutions” amid increasing national and regional challenges. FFS General Secretary Youcef Aouchiche stated that the party’s candidate would be chosen at an extraordinary congress soon. Aouchiche criticized the temporary alliances forming ahead of the election, suggesting that such practices harken back to the Old Algeria Era, and affirmed the FFS’s commitment to maintaining its values and identity.

MSP Makes Its Choice

The MSP has chosen its president, Abdelaali Hassani Chérif, as its presidential candidate. This decision was announced following an extraordinary session of the party’s national consultative council. The MSP highlighted that the decision was made by a large majority after thorough debate, with the aim of actively participating in the democratic process and offering a political alternative.

RND Wants a Consensus President

Following El Bina’s endorsement of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the RND reiterated its “unwavering support” for the President of the Republic. Speaking in Mila, RND General Secretary Mustapha Yahi emphasized that the next president should “embody a figure of national consensus capable of rallying Algerians.” Yahi praised the constructive dialogue between the president and political parties, underscoring the importance of consultation to strengthen political trust and encourage participatory democracy. The RND also expressed support for political consensus, particularly within the alliance formed with the FLN, El Bina, and El Moustaqbal, and is considering presenting a consensus candidate for the presidential election.

El Karama Calls on Tebboune to Run

Mohamed Daoui, General Secretary of the El-Karama party, announced in Sidi Bel-Abbès that his party supports Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s candidacy for a second term. During a meeting at the El Kabatti public library, Daoui stated that El Karama calls on Tebboune “to run for a second term to continue maintaining the country’s stability and the major reforms he initiated during his first term.” Daoui emphasized that the central committee of El-Karama unanimously supports Tebboune’s candidacy and urged all Algerians to participate in the upcoming election to preserve national stability.

RCD Remains Undecided

In contrast, the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) has yet to decide on its participation in the presidential election. Speaking in Tizi Ouzou, RCD President Atmane Mazouz stressed the significance of this decision within the national political context and stated that the party has not yet reached a definitive position. Mazouz also highlighted the importance of national unity and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, describing the ongoing situation as “genocide.”

As the election date approaches, the Algerian political landscape is rapidly evolving, with parties and candidates positioning themselves for what promises to be a pivotal electoral contest.
